I was looking through some old files on my computer and found this image I did back in school. Its one of the first things I did in 3D. Not great but it sure was fun.

Not great? What in the hell is your opinion of great, then? If it were any better, I'd bump my head on my monitor, trying to walk into this room, and kick my feet up on the footstool. ...Not great, indeed.

And this is one of your first images? Rock on, my talented friend. You have apparently found your calling. Some of my earlier 3D work is my favorite stuff, but I kept it pretty simple. I particularly love the lighting in this scene. The gentle light in the window panes, and the light falling over the fireplace area. It's very convincing sunlight. I also get the desire to walk up to those windows, and lean against the cool glass, gazing at the pleasant day... maybe even step outside for a walk in the yard.

I hope to see more of your "not great" work, along with what you consider "great!"

hehe your funny feebsaint.

yeah looks pretty good buddha. I was wondering how many lights you used in the scene. And it looks like you used shadow maps, is that right. Any way I was also wondering where you went to school?

Feebsaint, haha I'm glad you like it.

Elijah, It has been a while since I last saw the max file but if I think there were about 15 - 20 lights in there. I didn't use any shadow maps I just placed the lights, rendered, tweaked the lights and rendered again over and over. As far as school I went to Digipen in Redmond Washington.

Yeah thats what I thought. if you live in redmond you probably go to digipen. What are you doing now. Working with nintendo on the game cube??? or somthing else.
One more thing. I didn't mean a shadow bitmap I ment map shadows instead of raytraced shadows.

Haha, I told you man, whether you like it or not, this is one of your best pieces and there's good reason why everybody stops to take a look at it when they review your reel. I'm still jealous of the lighting you pulled off even before I showed you the multiplier spinner...

Oh yeah, forgot to tell you that your art sucks (incase you're sarcasm impaired this's an inside joke people...don't flame me )

wow. awsome place and a great job doing it.

my complains are rather small but i'll write them anyway-

the table in the middle of the room doesn't seem to cast a shadow. how is that possible?

the textures on the chest next the fire place and on the pillows are a lil too smooth.

but the pic is excellent.

how was the BG outside the windos done?

Elijah, sorry about the mix up on the shadows. Yeah those aren't raytraced. As far as going to Digipen and what I'm doing now. Well I (as well as flinthawk) are Digipen drop outs. I am currently working for Boss Game Studios in Redmond as a environment artist.

topeira, yeah the stuff you pointed out is all very true and those are the kind of faults I would like to fix if I still had the Max file. Thanks for the crit. you had great points. =) The back ground was simply done by creating a few polys and curing them around the scene to give it depth. Then I just applied a out side photo on the polys and that was that.
