Okay, tonight I decided to try again with another woman(from reference) to see if I could do any better. Thanks everyone who commented on my last attempt. Maybe next time I'll move to more interesting pictures instead of just boring pics practicing digital painting :-)
And a few steps for those interested.
This time I used more opacity with bigger brushes in the beginning. Also After step one I increased the size of the image, then downsized for the final display picture. I tried detailing the hair different (in the bigger resolution, with pressure sensitivity on size&opacity).
crits/comments/etc. very welcome, especially on the technique or other things I could try differently next time.
Thanks
-JK
[edit]fixed image tags
[edit]fixed the lip a bit
[edit]really quick fix, ran an eraser across the top back of her head to get rid of some of the wispyness.

It's really nice but the hair looks a bit like fur...you should really try to clean it up |

This looks an improvement from your other picture in a previouse post. I like the brush style of the hair. I think smudging it may loose that style that goes with the face, as I suggested smudging it last time, but try it and see what you get. The only thing that concerns me about the hair is that it should be painted in long farly even lengths so the back shouldn't be as wispey, though I'm not sure how it is in the ref. pic. |

Yeah, I've been having a hard time finding a way of drawing hair that I like the results. I tried smudging it when drawing the picture, but I couldn't decide if I liked it better so I axed it and went with unsmudged. Maybe I'll fool around some more with smudging. I am purposely trying to stay away from an overly soft look, but I don't really like the look i'm getting either, esp. the hair. I think next time I will try laying down the original shading pattern in the hair better too. It does look kinda fur like I think I went a little crazy with some short brushstrokes in the hairs, too thick too.
And here's a scan of the reference. I tried to draw her head in a more upright position among other things.
And thanks for the comments everyone
