I did this cover for a live-action-roleplaying-game for a friend of mine. I found it to be a bitch to draw. The foto of the castle i was handed was hard to break up into b/w shapes, but i had to, because it's going to be reproduced by copier. It is finished, so it goes to gallery, but I was rather unhappy with the result, cause I feel it's hard to read and the shading doesn't really make sense, IMO. Further I was short with time when getting to the characters, which shows, i fear.
I know I could have done better, but I don't exactly know what. Maybe some of you have any ideas where I did mistakes and what i could have done better. Any help or comments are appreciated.
I'm sorry for the filesize, but a smaller version would have made no sense showing. |

live action role playing sessions are funny, i've never been to one, but i've heard stories, i hear they have rules against the typical bar+women+ale+horny dwarves scene...if you know what i mean...*cough*
that kind of thing works better on pen & paper....
then again, they could have been lying about the whole thing to try and get me to go to one...
poster looks cool too...nice job... |

I don't know what you're worried about. I t looks fine to me. At least as good as old school AD&D stuff, if not better. I think that castle is a big black mass that really wants to dominate the pic, but you balanced it pretty well with the tree branches. My favorite part is how you have the guys walking the trail all spaced out, seems very natural/realistic. Good foreshortening on hat guys sword. my only suggestion for improving it would be to add ink washes to help balance values and dramatize the scene. maybe print out a bunch of copies and mess around with a big watercolor brush, and see what you can do.

Have to agree with artgolem. The castle seems to be alot of black.
Then there is that whole german language thing (ich bin ein amerikanisches
(sp)) that part confuses me.
I like the classic AD@D part A LOT.
Great Job (mein freund (sp))

Nex: Danke.
PandaX52: Larp can be fun, you should check it out. Some people just can't play, which sometimes makes the roleplaying feel really stupid, but a huge battle with about 100 persons on either side is intense. And then you can hack the bad roleplayers...
Artgolem: Thanks for your kind words, messing with some copies is a nice idea, I'll have a go at it. I was just worried about the feeling i was not knowing what i did, when i started to add random crosshatching to the ground below that fortress. I guess i just need a little more practice with B/W sketches to loose the uneasy feel...
Dthind: Yes, the castle is pretty heavy, but I wanted it to be a menacing block of darkness dominating the horizon, definitely drawing most of the viewers attention to it. Maybe it got a little too heavy...
The german words just read "Alcyon 5 - the third seal. May 18th to 20th on Schmidtcastle/Hunsrueck", that's all. Doesn't matter much.
But i feel encouraged with everyone being reminded of AD&D/DSA-stuff, since that's pretty much what i was going for. |
