Very nice! i like the first one the most.
i must say these look quite different than your digital art, esp the kind of art we used to see about a couple of weeks ago.. do you find it harder/easier than working digitally? (well, besides that obvious UNDO key).
by the way- did you use reference for all of them? what kind? (photo/real) |

I like the feel of the real canvas a lot more than the digi tablet, and something accomplished with real paint feels more valuable somehow. Waiting for the paint to dry gives some time to think which parts are worth saving - digitally I'm much more impatient and sometimes kill good parts without much thought. Zoom option gives more control in the digi life, which is always nice. Being obsessed with polishing details is not good, and haunted me for some time. Traditional painting has helped it.
They're all done from life, my dad stuffed some animals when he was young, so we have some old skulls lying around :)
Third one took some 8 hours, did it on a portrait painting course and the last one is a self-portrait painted from mirror. The white sparkles on the pics are reflections. The last one is also painted on paper, I ran out of canvas but had to paint :). It doesn't seem to dry like normally, but is still sticky after about 40 days.
I've done so much more digitally, I get better results with it, but am catching up with real brush. Oil is much harder than digistuff, IMO.
I bought some gouache as well:

Very cool, Gecko! I like the first two the best. They have a better grasp on form and surface texture than the portraits. Though, between the two portraits, I like the lady better. The texture of the man is throwing me off. I think between them though, a bit more rendering and study of the eyes would be great.
All in all, VERY cool. ...man, that skull has some really nice brushstrokes in it. ;} And I LOVE the highlights on the glasses...

I like the self portrait, i like the way you've mixed the whole scale of colors in it, and still it looks "whole". I mean that you don't focus your look in to one place (like in to the ear for example) , you can see it as whole..
I don't like the one with the scull..
(just want to be different)
<grin>
