yeah, that looks awesome!
Rules for water? I have no idea. I imagine some "frothiness" where the water meets the rocks from all the splashing it would be doing, kinda like you have with the waterfalls. Just a suggestion. Totally looks like water as is, though. Nice!!

Cool pic.
I am guessing that this is a lake? Nice water. I assume that because there are no waves hitting the rocks. Oh yeah..cool waterfall too.
Rules for water...Hmmmm.
Never painted it myself but.....I understand that.
Water reflects its environment.
water is transparent. It is affected by atmospheric perspective. Which means you can only see so far through it until it becomes dark. Effect Varies though.
It refracts the path of light so that it seems to 'bend' when entering and leaving.
One other thing is if you are standing on a beach facing the horizon of sea, you will be able to see into and through the water closest to you, but the water further away on the horizon only displays a reflection. Of course this is because of the angle you view it at. Also keep in mind the lighting of the scene and atmospheric perspective, because I reckon this would affect that as well.
Water clarity can affect alot of things. Muddy water. Spring water, salt water etc. All need to be considered.
I think what you wanted to know was, that drawing water consists of mostly (in your case esp) drawing reflections. Just think of it as any other material, in the sense that the reflections can be positioned by tracing rays of light. A simple rule for a large expanse of water would be paint reflections on the side of a wave or ripple that is faceing you.
Hope that all made sense!
ULTIMATE RULE:
If it looks 'right' then it probably is ok.

Nice Work! Thanx for posting the high-res image as well- it is instructive to see the brush strokes. (Q: do you use 2 monitors, one showing target res. and one with working res.? Q: most of your tones are of a single value- was this done with a mouse?!)
Using abstracts to build form and allowing them to blen in the eye is often more effective than a slaveish adhearance to smooth tonal rendering. I find the process less than intiuitive; given the propensity to line art, aparently so do alot of people. Lines are cool... but it's all about light, as you show us here.

Thanks for the feedback and the info on water properties, it's much appreciated!
MonkeyBoy:
I only have one monitor, it's a 19" at 1280 resolution. Most of the time I had the pic in fullscreen (zoomed out about 50-67%).
For target res I used the Navigator window (didn't really know it was resizable until now)
Since the pic is quite thin, the palettes fit nicely on the sides without getting in the way..
Hehe, I doubt you should use my brush strokes in any learning purpose.. I'm quite new to painting. I don't have any education, so I don't really know what I'm doing (you should be looking at Mr. Mullins..)
When doodling, I almost always try to indicate form and volume with light (i.e I suck at line art.. )
nah, not a mouse, it's made with a Wacom graphire..
Laters, gotta go..
