Yeah yeah I know.. another dang Joe Mad pic. I liked this pencil sketch and I wanted to see how to go about coloring pencils with out them being inked. Anyway, this was my result:

this is the sketch if anyone wants to see it: http://www.geocities.com/chapel_t9/junk/gully_print.jpg
dalickwid uploaded it at another forum.

So someone else drew it and then you colored it?

Nice coloring job, indeed. I wish I could color my own drawings so well.

I hate his signature though. That's not your fault, obviously, but people should make their signatures SUBTLEY. Not this big blaring thing. His signature is the size of her FACE. =(

hehe.. that is pretty funny. Yes, Joe Madureira drew it.. http://www.joemadureira.com

This was on some promotional card they used. It was a really small drawing that is why the sig is so big.

I like the way you coloured it, it's really smooth and soft, easy to look at.

Her(?) nose bugs me a bit. It stands out a lot, although, being a nose, it probably should. Maybe more of a shadow on it's underside would be a good thing?

For some reason, my eyes, are drawn right to that big arsed glove all the time.

Nice colouring chapel
I really like the glove and the blueish tone on the dark side of her face.
So what did you think of colouring pencils? Or do you prefer colouring inked pictures?

Heh, I actually redrew this same image as practice when I first started buying BC, agree it's a damn cool drawing. You know, I actually like the look you've got here, the un-inked look. It really gives it a look somewhere between the real and the comic if you know what I mean. Have any other comics out there tried this type of look? Anyway, nice job.

very nice chapel, the skin tone is really nice and the cloud blends in perfect

did you color it in cmyk? is it just me or is it really hard to get super bright colors in cmyk

Well, Capn, those super bright colors you get in RGB are often out of gamut. And therefore can't be done in CYMK. If you know how the color works, you can get very bright colors, though.

Thanks for the comments.. keep em coming.

jasonN: This was neat, but I don't think it wasn't meant to be colored. Inks usually are. If you look at the linework I had to toy around with it to make things look correct. In other words pencils would be cool if the penciler has it in mind to go straight to colors. Inkers clean the pics up alot.

Flinthawk: The cover to Ultimate X-Men #2 is like this. Also, Tony Daniel's Silke is non-inked, but he adjust the hell out of the levels.

CapyPyro: I did it in cmyk, but converted it to RGB when I was done.

Nice work on this one! I like the blue on the face too! It's sort of similar to what we just did on a psm cover with joe, but I'm not allowed to post it until Feb.12th...

Liquid!: I'll be honest I got the idea from a preview pic for Battle Chasers 9 you did. In the sketch he did some dark shading to make up for the lack of color.. I didn't want remove the linework so I tried to chose a shade I though would work. If that makes sense. Thanks for the comment.

Chapel,

a quality piece of work once again. Great stuff.

Believe it or not, I've been tied up with other things and still haven't gotten around to finishing up that Bat/Supes pic I've been working on (the one you gave me coloring advice on). Boy, were you ever right about doing the backgrounds first. Maintaining interest in the piece now that the main characters are colored in is difficult. Might start all over.

Interesting to see your work over pencils as opposed to inked artwork. I like it. It gives it a less polished "comicky" feel. Also, I think it encourages you to use a looser more "painterly" coloring technique(or at least it seems that there's less use of the lasso tool). Would be interesting to see you try this with other pencil-only pieces or sketches.

Again, great stuff.

cuddly: I didn't use the lasso to make any cuts on this piece. I only use the lasso to select entire sections, so I don't color over other parts.

Oooh, I like!

Great use of colours, a lot more subtle than I'm used to seeing in this type of picture.

Hey Chapel..

while comics aren't my main interest, I must say that this is probably one of the best colours I've seen you post to the forum!
Good stuff!
