The perspective was supposed to be a little funky, taken from below the bird, thus the tilting. The visible horizon kills that, sorry.

To those of you who have actually seen these birds, I have to admit I'm not sure if that looks like a Pelican at all. Should've used reference, hehe.

Crits, comments, anything? :]

must admit - a pelican is odd-looking anyway. Really nice reflected light.

That is just millimetres off of stunning, well done. I've never seen a pelican so I can't help either. One thing that bothers me is the way the beak is parallel to the edge of the page. That just me being stoopid though.

keep it up chief!

awesome Gecko i think, the colors and the lighting are superb, and for me it looks almost photorealistic (but im not at all a pro on pelicans)

the only thing that bother me (and it bother me a lot in fact) is the blurry weird horizon line
since you say it is from behind the pelican we should see more of the sky, and the water should be maybe lighter, in order to explain the great water reflection lighting effects you draw on the wood (they are stunning)

work a bit more on the background and you have a perfect image (imho )

ps : dammn the colors are so wonderful on the pelican

Great work!
I like the green lighting on the wood. Adds more atmosphere and realism.
A pelican actually has a relatively long beak with a soft lower beak. It doesn't sag down like that unless there's fish in there.
This pelican is from go.com
http://www.go.com/Split?col=WR&qt=pelican&Go=GO!&nh=1&pat=imd&sf=1&svx=WD_thumb&st=4

Speaking of which, I find go.com convenient for reference images. Just check the image radio button and it'll return all picture results with thumbnails.

Man... You do absolutely NOT suck at values!
This is Great.

Are those caustic light effects from the water, I see on the beak? If yes... you rule even more!

Hey gecko, this pic is much much better (the light looks spooge like) then the last ones and they were very good too. Looks like you learned a lot from your last post.
I wish I could do that (sight).
I saved this pic to learn something about light!

Post more stuff like this!!

goddam! this is just awesome(well, you know that i don't know birds all that well, so i can't say anything on the likeness issue ). how did you achieve that neat texture on the bird? just some intensive brushing or what? and sheesh, where did you get the time to do this?

Your sense for light and color never stops to amaze me. really nice.
I agree with what you said about the sky, that it ruins the sense of perspective. What if you just make a gradient of a sky, without the horizon, and make some clouds that gives you the perspective ? could be really nice.

frost, no! what you're gonna do is post more often, and maybe quit calling your painting thread "frost-o-crap" :]

el tigre, you're right about the beak placement, could've been planned better.

oh and yeah, the greens are reflected light from the water below, i hope it was obvious.

mime: the background could be better, i agree with that. but I also think it doesn't have to be lit the same way as the bird, in order to be a convincing scene.

tayete: lol, don't give up.

faustgfx, will you be having a secret handshake with which you start every meeting? Just a thought.. would be really cool and lift the team spirit.

steve: Stopping now is just not gonna happen, faustgfx's assassination team is bound to fail. I've taken care of that prehand.

kig: i guess it could. :) as already said in many of the comments, it could be better.

capt flush: Lol! True.. sorry about using the same subject, but once i ordered you to paint the pelican i realized how funny a subject it would be to do a piece of my own.. so i did. My cropping is still a lot tighter than the one in your sketch.

janne: hehe, I think I invested the time you were doing your math. The brush work was 1st. regular photoshop brushes -> custom brushes for texture -> regular brushes for breaking up patterns in the texture. Time invested: about 2 hours, resolution 800x600.

The chameleon thread really made me think about this stuff, have..to..practise..more..now. Thanks for the nice comments.

/me hopes this is a change for the better...

http://members.surfeu.fi/pveik/turhatjpgt/pelican4.jpg

I think it is.

Even though the lightened background took a lot away from the reflections. should i brighten them to get the effect back or would that go too much overboard?

edit: only url left, don't wanna flood with too many pics

this obviously rules :)

in the new version the green reflected light isn't that clear as in the first one.. i mean it's not as clear where the green comes from.. well dunno perhaps i'm just too simulated-daft. :)
