Me & Micke did this cover last year. It's done for valve as a cover for the magazine GamePro. We don't have that magazine in Norway, so we haven't seen it printed yet.
Anyway, we know the leg looks a bit to in-perspective compared to the ladder, but never bothered or asked to fix that, since it would be hidden on the printed cover...-that's atleast what we have been told
hope you like it.

Wow, great picture guys. I remember beating that giant green baddie in the game, a tought one Yah that legs a little weird looking, it just comes off as really forced perspective. Cool expression on Gordy, to bad real games can't look like this I'll keep an eye out for the printed version

wow that's really good. That leg is hiddious though How could it be hidden in the cover? I don't see any way off croping it out without taking any of the other important parts of the image off with it. Do you mean like printing on top of it? It's still a cool image. |

Great stuff guys! You somehow make Gordon look even cooler. I somehow didn't even catch the issue that had this as a cover though. Oh well, I've got the original to look at in all it's glory now

I like the picture overall... great work.
But as you mention, the leg is really weird!!!
Also I have a hard time figuring out the leg, that is sticking outside of the frame.
I cant really see how it's going to be placed on the ladder in it's current space/size relationship with the ladder.

heh I KNEW that cover looked familiar, I got me that magazine on the way back from a Vegas trip... btw don't worry about the leg in the cover, it's completely covered by a half naked girl from "dead of alive"

This is really nice work guys.
My favorite part is the face. The expression is wonderful and the lightning is excellent.
The leg is a little so,so, but why bother? That weapon is a pretty useless one against that green thing, unless you are a really mean badass.

I love it. Nothing really to criticize, except the guy's hand looks too big. Great image, Micke and Joachim. |

Nice! That pit-monster was my favorite level in half-life. Nice lighting and atmosphere. Good capturing of Gordon Freeman, too. And yes, the perspective on the leg is very exaggerated. The figure in midair looks like floating or being blasted into the air. Is he meant to be falling?
Co-op works are fun, who did what part of it?
BTW, the two of you have been invited by Awetopsy to participate in his co-op-tilegame (thread on the work in progress
board), care to join? Would be cool.

The light on the face is really great! (the whole picture looks great but I especially like the face).
How do you do these cooperations. How do you work? Is one of you doing the concept and the other one does the colouring?
I ask because I love the work of both of you but I can't see which part of the picture is done by whom.
It looks like you built a perfect team.
One last question: did you render the tube or did you do the circles by hand? |

Great! Wish I could do such lightning.
How exactly you did that as ccop-piece? One did line rendering and the other did the colours?
BTW. Micke: You still check black scarab sometimes?

bell_maker, thanks, but don't forget that this is just as much micke's work as mine
I'll give you all some answers to the questions later, if micke don't do it first.

I new it!!! I new that had to be at least one of you!! But both together? As soon as I saw it I thought 'heh, mike or joachim probably made that'
Sweeeeeey picture guys. So do you just hand it off to each other or does one of you specialize in b/g and the other on figures. How do you both do it? |

Woah. That rocks! excellent depth, guys! I love how absolutely huge that monster looks! And the main guy is really cool, too. Superb action and expression! But I must agree on that leg, as everyone else seems to have said. It's fine for being covered up, but if you're ever planning to showcase that without the text, I'd fix it.
Hmmm...both legs, actually. But, anyway, great, great, great job!
*copy* *paste into depth reference logs*...
hehehe. ;}

i kind of enjoy the forced perspective but yeah its kinda weird. regardless, there's no way you can knock this kind of work. This is absolutely excellent!
Look at that facial expression. He's like NOOOooo you're not my father and he actually looks cool instead of a nerd. hehe great job guys.
One thing though.. Whats he doing with a crowbar trying to defend himself? He might as well throw it down the hole ehehe

Has it been so long since everyone played Half-life that they forgot you can't kill that bugger with weapons. You had to distract it with noise so that you could open up the way to the next ladder and thru much adventuring, kill it with the rocket engine.
Gordon should really be holding a grenade with the pin falling down - that would create roughly 53% more tension in the pic.
Oh yeah, and this illus. Rocks! It's great to see the pit monster honored with a cover shot. I can almost tell who-did-what in this piece. Great co-op composition you two.
I look forward to a "Half-Life 2" starring Gordon as much as I look forward to "Deus Ex 2" and "Metroid 4" for Gamecube. |

hey everyone, thanks a lot for all the feedback. Maybe we'll do something about that leg, cause it really bugs us too. It's just that when you are being told, "it won't be shown on the cover", and this is contract work, you do what is needed to get the client happy, and don't start playing hero. But, since we probably will put it up on our pages, it's worth doing it.
ABout how we work together. Well, we always sit in the same room when we co-op. I really don't think you guys can recognise who did what, even though certain aspects could look familar to each of our styles. But, believe me, on this cover we both did work on absolutely everything. we started doing plenty of different consept-sketches, to see what gamepro wanted. From these sketches, one of mine was the basis. but, everything got more or less changed from that one through out the process. In the process, we start together like 5 min each on the picture to come up with the main light setting and colors. And, then later we split up. So, f.ex I start on the character and micke on the monster. Then after a while when we get bored, we change, so I do the monster and micke the charcter. By this way, we get to exploit boths qualities when working on it.
This picture didn't take more than about 2-3 days to create, it was a certain deadline we had to make. That is ofc. after the consept period, which usually takes most of the time.
Maybe we could/will do a tutorial on how we did the picture and how we co-op'ed, trying to explain the process ?

joachim, that'd be great! I have a hard time visualizing how you do it with 2 seperate files. I think I can understand how in the beginning but after that it's confusing! hehe

sergenth : I think they chose the crowbar cuz it's such a trademark weapon for Halflife... i loved that hunk of metal... nothing like beating the crap outta half-alien zombies with it... |
