Trying some new stuff, trying to break out of a rut. Does it float anyone's boat?

I'm glad you liked that mech picture, but it's not really anything new in terms of making art. I'm just trying to expand my horizons a little bit.

I like it. It makes the face look made of light, rather than the shadows to me...i dig it. |

I think it's very cool and personally I don't think you should make art for themilkman, but rather for yourself. keep trying new things and please, for the good of humanity, keep sharing your adventures. |

Francis,
I like the pic and I respect the fact that
you are branching out...bustin out of the
comfort zone in anything is never easy.
My thought is that the character is a blind,
aged sort that is not enjoying the best QOL
at the moment. Stay uncomfortable, man

Very nice cool style, Francis. I appreciate that you're trying new things, too. Recently, upon inspiration from Dhabih and many many other fantastic artists in this forum, I've been gradually evolving my coloring style to a more 'painted' and 'fine arts' style, if that makes any sense. Little evolutions. (Been too caught up in the comic way of doing things, and if you're not in that industry anymore, then it's not lucrative, yes?)
ANYway. Do keep pushing yourself. And always show all of us fans here your experiments. ;} Very nice work. |

This is the best Ive seen from you I think.
I really like the overexposeing and the colours. and the squares on the sides are perfect.
simple and nice composition.
only problem I see is that maybe he doesnt look very old =)

Francis,
I think that the image is too smooth. It could probably benfit from some texture just to break up the surface alittle bit. The look is interesting though and it probably has some possibilities.
I agree with you based on that other thread that the banjo thing was a bit kooky but what can you do.....
Late,

This is good. I'm looking really hard at it and I can't figure out how you made so many sharp lined shapes everywhere, and how none of the lines anywhere have the same style. Lasso Tool... uh... hand-done... I dunno!
I am impressed by your experimentation because only 40 minutes ago... I drew a picture I drew already! I am cursed to repeat myself in drawing hell! (actually, I was just proving I could draw it again :P) |

hmm.. I have to admit it is an interesting start, but it should be more finished, more depth, more something. I'm not the best critic on this one. One question: having nightmares?
Paint it and they will come..

Hey Francis! =)
I like the guy as I'm into dark grueling stuf depending on the days. This is definitely different for you, nice to see you exploring. =) The face looks "color dodge"-ish, which sorta bothers me personally, but there's nothing wrong with that really, it does look like like over-exposed sunlight and stuff.. I sort of like, perhaps exploring this some more?
(Was a great honor meeting you and the guys!)
Take care! |

I like it Francis, the harsh, overblown light is rich and dynamic, but leaves a lot of room for detailing the shadown without compromising the contrast. As a whole though, it doesn't 'float my boat' in terms of a finished piece. I look smore like one of the initial steps in a great painting. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for fresh looking, loose paintings, but some of the harsh, crunchy areas (selections?) strike a dischord with my eye.
I dunno, maybe it's just me.
Keep playing though, I'm sure elements of this experimentation will find their way back to your finished art and take it somewhere you wouldn't have discovered otherwise.

Francis:
I'm not a huge fan of this one, however, I think you REALLY shouldn't keep doing the same thing. Trying new things is super-important even if a particular piece doesn't quite turn out the way you plan. The worst thing to do is to become static. Stretching and exploring different avenues is definitively important.
Keep it up!

PS: I would like to come down and visit Phil and you guys one of these days, let me know how your schedules are down there.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm at that point where I'm realizing how much I don't know.
Hey Merekat, are (were) you a comics pro?
Simon - yeek, I hope not! But thanks for the compliment.
Merg - good tips. And the guitar is what gets the chix man!
Waldo - I feel like I oughta know who you are...
McSteed - ?
Frost - was an honor meeting you and Snake as well - just sorry we didn't have more time to spend hanging out. Maybe next time...
rdgraffix and liquid, thanks for the honest and helpful replies (actually thanks to everyone for that).
More to come.

Hello Francis,
It's me (Waldo) replying from home and we've never personally met. I park my sorry butt in Fred and TENMAN's class on Saturdays and smear a lot of charcoal over newsprint in a weak attempt to improve myself. I've had the pleasure of sitting next to a forum member (or two) a couple of times and share some laughs.
Now if I can only figure out where that giggling IHOP is...
Cheers and keep up the great work!
