Here's one I did for my cousin while on holidays in Jamaica over christmas. My concept of some future generation of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution rallye car. Took about 3 hours from design to rendering.

Perspective is off (note how it widens toward the right side !!) and the angle of the windshield pillar suggests more tumble-home (taper toward the top) in the greenhouse than is indicated. Kind of loose and cartoony, buy what the hell!

I'm actually preparing a full-day tutorial & lecture on the subject of Understanding & Communicating Form for this year's Game Developer's Conference. After the conference I will be putting my notes up online. Should be sometime around the end of March/ beginning of April. I'll post a link when I'm done.

Seems like you'd want more tumble home in a rally car.

Nice sketch, too. You woulda made a good car designer.

Cap'n - No reference, just drew it up. I did sketch up an underlay first, then experimented with design details on overlay sheets of paper before settling on this design. And yeah, I used to work for Nissan for 4 1/2 years.

GRID - I don't know of any books specifically on car rendering (other than airbrush-style car illustration books), but Design Rendering Techniques by Dick Powell (NorthLight publications, ISBN 0-89134-125-0)has a couple of good car tutorials in it and covers some good basic marker techniques. Also look at Car Styling Magazine (Japanese) if you can find it, or Auto & Design Magazine(Italian). They often have a lot of car renderings in them.

Thanks for finally posting this!! I've wanted a copy of it since I saw it on your damn desk!!

Again, cool design I like it alot.

As for car drawing books, I just got "How to Draw cars like a pro" by Thom Taylor, really cool book. (I also got a crap one you should stay away from, well unless your just getting into drawing..."Draw Cars" Doug Dubosque)

Is that watercolor and marker? I think you should have narrowed out the rear end of the car. The whole shape seems like a big block and it takes time to understand it. The spoiler on the back makes the shape rather awkward. Aside from the other perspective errors you already mentioned, the reflective surface you portrayed is quite realistic.

I live in Michigan and I went to the auto-show. Some nice stuff there. No cool sketches like yours though....
