I know some people consider art heavily based on photos to be cheating, and usually, I don't do this.

But what I wanted this time was a sweet portrait of my kitten, and I had /no/ idea how to draw a black cat. So I based it on a photo I took today... Sowwy!

Picture I made...

Reference picture.

Thankee

I'm pretty satisfied with how the eyes look, as well, though I wish I had made them warmer in colour - the actual colour doesn't really look like that.

They're more greenish, and warmer... I'll have to fix that :/

Enayla: This pic is wonderfully textured, the eye's are also extremely well rendered.

There's nothing wrong with working from a reference photo! I do it all the time.

What people don't like is what has now become known as threnodizing. He he he, look it up in the FAQ.

Anyway, great pic Enayla, keep up the good work!

Oh... I see someone's done the pussy joke.

Golongria: :P!! *giggle* Heheh, I was expecting someone to say that. The comment popped up more quickly than I thought, though Glad you like the pic.

ceenda: Thanks! I looked up Threnody in the old forum, and now I kind of see why everyone here is so agressive about doing stuff like that. I don't, though. I use reference from time to time, but never like /that/ (been accused of it, though not fun at all)

(Edit) For some reason, the ordinary :P with the small p , shows up like an ordinary on my screen... weird... so I changed it.

Every time I see Azrael, I notice something new and incredibly cool about him. This time I noticed that he has red hair on his belly. Something we have in common!

I agree with everyone here - the pic is absolutely wonderful. The fur looks nice and natural and the eyes are amazing.
Something that I noticed though, is that the nose looks like it's slightly out of perspective and it's a little bit too soft and reflective.
Overall the pic is awesome. Keep it up!

I don't see how you could have done a portrait without a ref. pic. Try getting your cat to sit still..... unless their asleep.

Very pretty

yep. very nice pic.

only 2 thing s to mention:
i also think that the nose looks a (very) little out of perspektive... or the nose looks more flat compared to the reference.

second: the fur on the *trying to find the right english word* stomache looks a little wrong cause on your pic the same fur seems to partly origin in the head.

and yes, if you would trainee the cat sit still you wouldnt need reference pics anymore. but i dont see a problem with reference pics.

cheers
peter

Amazing picture .. every single time I see that you've posted a new picture, I think to myself, "Self, this one is gonna suck! It's got to!" There's got to be odds and averages and figures to support this deep, thought-out theory of mine .. but yet every time I see your pictures they astound me.

Please, keep up the amazing work! ... and maybe make one suck every now and then just so i feel smart? please?

I've had four black cats cross my path in the past week and a half. Little Azrael makes five. Lots of good luck headed my way. Anyone want to buy a mirror, only slightly broken?

IN5/\NE-D/\VE: Aww, I don't want to make people /stop/ drawing. If anything, I'd love to be a bit inspirational

SlightlyTwisted: Heheh, yes he does. He's so cute.

Jim S: Hm, now that you mention it, I can see what you mean! I'll have to do something about that... Thanks!

OkkE:

hydrid: I guess you're right Azrael tends to sleep in such odd positions when he /does/ go to sleep. Wouldn't be very fun to have a portrait of a cat completely sprawled out on its back. Or maybe it would...

peter: Ooh, I hadn't even noticed the fur thing! Thanks! And, well, training a cat isn't always so easy. Especially not one so ... stubborn as Azzy here.

Tweeder: Eeep, sorry

FrostBite: He's the sweetest...

sacrelicious: Heheh, well... keep away from ladders, and don't put any keys on the table... (did I ever tell you that I really like your username?)

Spitfire: Poor you Hope you get better. Glad you like the pic, though.

faustgfx: One cute toy animal coming up

shahar2k: He's not a persian, but he /does/ have really long fur. Doesn't show very well on the picture...

Fixed it slightly... I know this is a gallery for /finished/ pictures, but since I am posting this in the same thread, it should be all right... right?

This new version is gorgeous!

They eyes look a lot warmer, more alive, now, and the nose looks significantly more at home on the front of his face.

As for his fur, well, you could sit there stroking that all day, couldn't you? Little cuddley bundle of style, that's what he is.

That's great! Those eyes...they capture the comical, quizzical looks cats always have. We've got 2 black and white cats at our home in Edmonton and 3 different ones in Iowa and they all make us laugh and enjoy life more! What can I say, that's one fine looking cat.
