Alright I went back and redid this pic pretty much from scratch. I think this one looks a little more clearer and better than my first attempt. I had some help from Laura DePuy on this. Really nice gal.

the first attempt is here: http://www.geocities.com/chapel_t9/colors/ironman.jpg

much better chapel, i was gonna suggest you reflect the fireworks off the metal, but sijun went down and i forgot too. it definatly adds an additional touch of realism.

Good stuff, Chapel. I actually had the same thing in mind as SporQ about the colors of the fireworks reflecting off the armor when you mentioned you were redoing this piece. This one did come out a bit clearer and the reflected lighting enhances the piece more.
What're you gunna work on next?

Hmmmm... although my opinion is probably meaningless to you Chapel, I think I liked the original better. The colors seem washed out and the fireworks (esp. the green explosion) resemble... well, I don't know what. Sea anemones? I do like the increased reflected light on the armor, though. Really, you've done a great job; I just feel that the original was more vibrant. Please don't hurt me.

Thanks for the comments folks.

sacrelicious: My first attempt just seemed too vibrant. Everything was overdone and it took longer to focus in on what was actually going on.

Chapel, much as I hate to say it, I have to agree with Sacrelicious on this one.

I enjoyed your original picture better. Again, more because the colors were more pronounced. Also, the lightened mask in the new version doesn't work as well as the mask in the original.

However, I like portions of the redone version also, mainly the reflections of the various lights off the armor.

A couple of questions if you don't mind:

1) Where'd you get the line art for this project?

2) How do you make the glowing effects for the glowing parts on his glove?

Thanks for taking the time to read this. As always, a great piece. I just happen to like elements of the original version better.

I didn't notice how bad the masked looked till I got in to work this morning. I'll fix it tonight. I hate the way I rendered everything in the first attempt.

cuddly: 1. Someone offered it to me to color. Not really mine to distribute. 2. Airbrush tool set to screen and low opacity.. used above the lineart layer.

It looks good, but seems too busy with the color scheme. If it's dark out, the lighting scheme would be more sculptural and intense, instead of flooded light wouldn't it?(And the radiant color that of the fireworks) It looks as if there is a main light source beyond the viewer by his feet and one behind his head. Also, since he's metal, IMO, there should definitely be more variation in the color tone. The result would be a darker, more dynamic appearance. Just some suggestions. I'm just a dumb kid anyways, so take it or leave it.

Great work, Chapel. I wouldn't think twice about the quality if I saw it in a published comic. Couple things, though: 1) The glow on all the objects doesn't quite do it for me; I think of "fuzz" instead of "glow"--maybe if they had subtle color dodge-ish effect or something it would help. 2) I'd suggest adding just a wee bit of darker coloring in the yellow parts of his armor--not too much, but enough to give it some more contrast.

Jason: I added some darker tones and more highlights to the metal. The linework is really bad on the metal parts for this pic. Surprises me cause Joe Q usually does some awesome metal rendering. But this is about it for this pic.
