I am in the middle of my second project with a wacom tablet. (See newbie post for other one).
I think this one is much better. still not able to create something that is as realistic as I would like. And as far as lighting. I suck bad. I do not know if Painter classic has the necessary tools or not? I have found the tools are rather vague and maybe i just havent found the usefulness in it all yet. any familar with it offer some advice?
As you can see i am in the middle of working on it, but I cannot figure out how to get a few things right.
First of all the snow on his beard hat etc. I can't seem to make it look like snow.
Second, the lighting. i can not for the life of me make proper lighting in Painter. =(
Here is the reference image I was using as an example.
Thanks in advance ) |

Have you seen the "Lord of the Rings" - Sketches thread? There's a link to a tutorial.
I guess Painter classic has the necessary tools. Maybe it's not as easy to get the hang of it. |

ive seen that thread,... but the tutorial just shows painting a head of some girl. not much about anything else. And it shows some option windows that must only be in painter 7 . |

First you should pick the right colors and concentrate on the mainform of the hat and the face. Then go into details.
For example the eyes are much finer in the refpic and the whole image is a lot darker. |

Yes. but getting the right colors is where i hit the landblock. I can't seem to get them to match. That's why i asked about lighting. is there some special way with layers or something to add the bluish tint to his skin? |

You can add a new layer, fill it with a blue color and change the opacity.
(Or paint over the picture with a blue low opacity brush)
But you really shouldn't try to work on that picture. Try to choose the right colors in the first place.

his mustache looks like one of those bad santa claus mustaches'. think of his face as a face and not colors and shades. but as forms. the hair on the face should "feel" differently than the skin on the face. |

You could open you reference pic, and use the eyedropper tool all over the picture. you might be surprised just how limited palette there is. And notice how saturated the colours are compared to yours. WHen that is studied, try repainting the whole thign with a giant brush to get the colours/values right. The whole process should help you out. Stay on it! ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |
