Hello,
I've decided to graduate from lurker to poster, mainly because I have this image I am working on that I want to get some crits on. I am painting an image of a young Japanese woman, but I am at the point where every stroke I add only makes things worse. I figured that plenty of you would be able to see what it is I'm doing wrong/ could be doing better? I'm too close to the work to pick up on it.
Thanks,
Matthew |

Greetings Barefoot,
The picture looks pretty finished to me. The only thing that stands out to me is her left eye (that would be our right looking at her). There is the white line that goes over the eye. It looks a bit odd... I would touch that up and then call the pic a done deal. Good job on the rendering Matt, I look forward to seeing more of your posts.
Cheers,
- Shawn

I like your rendering and you're indicating form well. I think you might you might be struggling with indicating ethnicity though.
Japanese (and asians overall) tend not to have as prominent bridge of the nose as you've given her
The upper eyelid crease tends to be lower, almost to the top of the upper eyelashes, so much so that you often don't see it since it's so close to the eyelashes.
Japanese also tend not to be that dark unless they get alot of sun or they hail from the more southern regions of Japan. (like Okinawa)
Last but not least. The outer corners of the eye tend to be slightly higher than the inner corners. |
