Nice sketch, I like it.
don't let your friend's opionion bother you too much. Imo you are skilled in various medias already, Your characters, feline pics and monster series each had a distinct style and quality. If anime was the one that you enjoyed doing the most, don't let anyone put you down.
well.. on another note, I had been totally smitten by some landscapes posted here, so I tried it recently, and it's just as fun and rewarding. just browse around and see what strikes your fancy. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Ratbat, ever since I first saw your art, I've basically admired you and aspired to be as good as you. The illuminati image addicted me to your stuff. That said, I love your work, and I don't think you should change because your friends say so. You should do what you like doing best and what you're good at--and you're great with the style you have. Think I'll try CGing this over the weekend ![](images/smiles/icon_razz.gif) |

Dude! There is nothing wrong with anime! Anime has many styles in itself. If you're doing something you love don't let other people get you down!! I really like like your art! (I'd be happy to color something sometime if you have larger line art - just e-mail me. I started with anime style too, but I did expand from there. I can suggest many good books/websites if you are interested in other styles. |

Damn, and here I was hopeing there would go more than 3 hours before someone posted a better colloring then mine, heh
By the way jr, do you have any good tutorials on coloring the way you do? I mean, making the shadows and highlights kind of "flat" if you understand what I mean??? |

well, i'm still trying to learn this type of coloring. bascially i use the pen tool to color. and with the color, i never pick anything near the edges of the color box thing. www.genesoul.net has a great tutorial. |

DUDE! Tell them off! Jealous scum! I'm serious, Anime is bashed in north america.. well has been but look slowly its becoming more and more popular, anime-style is fantastic, i mean look at frickin american cartoon they suck, suure they are fluid (say disney ones) but like damn all anime is fun even though its not entirely fluid animation but the style is just kick ass... stick to this and become eleet with it. Traditional i dont like... I prefer to work on stuff like anime myself, although its true that uni and college will only accept traditional (bastages! lol ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

RATBAT, it's not too hard to move beyond anime style. In fact if you do move on I bet you'll enjoy your art more. The best way is just to start reforming people's faces into more realistic looking forms, refer to face sketches if you want to. Then naturally everything else will tug along in that direction. You don't even have to go all the way, you can stop in the middle of the transition and then move in another direction. It's fun to see where it developes. |

You know, RATBAT, I am going to lay this down for you...*GET SOME NEW FRIENDS*...that is a beautiful piece...I may be echoing some sentiments here, or I may be refuting them...I could care less, either way. You have the skills to do what ever you desire. It may not come "automatic", whatever it may be, but it will come with time and effort. If YOU want to do something "other than anime", then so be it...so let it be written...so let it be done. HOWEVER (COMMA) if you want to stick to anime, you can do fucking anime (or just plain, good ole fashion anime...whatever). The point of all MY rambling rhetoric is that it is a wonderful drawing, I may just be compelled to CG it and YOU do what YOU want to do, and if your FUCKING friends (or your regular friends, for that matter) depress you, then...you know what to do! Keep doing what YOU like! Aa-fucking-men!!! |

Howdy! I can say that I feel your pain. I've seen some people that draw anime get really upset because it is not very widely accepted by places like Sijun (well, that's just a generalization, I can see that many of us are obviously anime supporters, but the ratio of realistic to anime is pretty overwhelming). Anyway, if you want to do anime, then just do it! It's art, isn't it, and thereby beautiful in its own respect? And if you truly want to do something new, there's nothing wrong with doing both anime and realistic paintings. My little secret is that about half of my stuff is digital art and half of it is anime! It's not a problem to have an even dosage of both. But that's not for everyone. If I were you I wouldn't listen too seriously to those "friends"--the point of art is to make you happy! And if churning out portraits and cityscapes isn't your cup of tea, well, don't do it! The bottom line is that you enjoy what you do.
Isn't it?
As for the pic--I love it! I only wish that I could get clean lineart like that. May I be so bold as to ask what pens and paper you use?
(oh yeah...to whoever asked above, you can find a cel-style coloring tutorial under the tutorial link here.) |
