Hey guys... this is a header I'm working on for a designs site. I'm not sure what's wrong with it. I think I have some pretty cool fx in it, but it just doesn't look right.
Here are a few specific questions:
What can I do to unclutter this without taking away much from what I already have?
How can I improve the eye direction so that the header leads a person to the area below it?
How can I improve the colors on this?

I think it looks A-ok, except for the "Innovating web design" text. Remove the slight blur on it, since motion blur is pretty disturbing on the eye if you ask me. |

Good point Electro - remove the blur, Doc. You intent is to communicate, and the blur isn't helping.

There is a fallacy in your question, because the header is in itself an element of the whole layout. How you design the whole layout - header included - will determine the direction of the eye. As it stands I think your header has a pretty good balance to it, but it's own "micro" balance may go unnoticed once it's implemented in the visual, collective "macro" balance of the whole layout.
Try not to design the layout with too much focus on one area but rather the entire layout as a whole.
Hope that helps. |

I think it's pretty good so far. I like the colours used, and the feel of it. I personally don't mind the blur on the text, adds to the atmosphere of it. If I were to critique some, it would probably be on the virtual empty space smack dab in the middle of the banner, just a grid there. It acts a bit as a void for the eye. |
