her eyes are uneven, and ya the mouth is too big. Its also too close to the chin, or the chin is too small, however you want to look at it. A good rule of thumb for mouth size is that if you draw a line strait up from the corners of her mouth to her eyes they should hit at about the pupils. Your mouth touches the outer corners of the eyes, so it looks too big. I really like your line quality, you have a good graphic sense. |

I hope this helps a little. It shows the shape the mouth and eye should be in. The eye is not proportional to the rest of the picture BTW. The nose is a reference to how big lips tend to be. I hope this helps. You have a lot of talent, keep it up. |

Well what I would do if I were doing an outline drawing is to draw the image first. So you draw the woman naturally as you would, then you go back and you outline her, then you go back further and add the larger shading lines...
This way you will be sure to see what she looks like first before you just jump into an outline |

I think the first version looked a lot better, maybe it isn't anatomically correct but it has a more open original style, you should look more into it I think |

Your right about the first version looking better, but I can't seem to get the mouth or chin correct. This is supposed to be cameron diaz btw. Anyway here she is with no chin or mouth, Now how to make her beautiful once more?

Do you have the picture that you are taking reference off or is it coming right off the top of your head? |

What medium are you using? If you are doing this digitally, then you may want to put one layer over another and see how yours compare to the reference every once in a while.
But if not, or yes, here are some stuff I've learned: use reference coordinates when you are copying. By that I mean find out how far the lips go, from which part under one eye to the other. How wide the nose in ratio to the mouth, to the eye, etc. Just use your fingers to judge the distance, draw a couple of practices first and whatnot.
Another thing is to pay attention, go through the reference and look for every little detail, say the curve of the face, find the sub-curves and so on. And when you start drawing, lightly block in the silhouette and work your way up from there.
Keep in mind the axis of alignment, so your mouth and nose won't veer off from the eyes and jawline.
I know it's not much, but here's an example of what I mean.
After you blocked in and start to get darker, zoom out everyonce in a while and compare, just study the two for a while and spot and differences. Sometimes you just need to stop and look deep, or go make a sandwich and come back with a fresh mind.
And the last thing, have patience and DON'T GIVE UP. Don't expect to get it right the first, second, or the tenth try. The masters of the trade take hundreds, more like thousands, of tries and practices before they get anywhere near where they are.
Juck Jones once said "You have 10,000 bad drawings in you, so go ahead and get rid of them now."
Good luck, and most important of all, have fun!
Hope this helped. |
