Hey everyone. This is my absolute first ever painting... I know it's nothing special, doesn't even have a background. But it's from a picture zak provided me with. How am I doing so far? Please if it's looking like shit, tell me how to make it better.

thanks, the shading part I am still working on. I have choosen a light source from the top left corner I guess, now it's time to shade and color and highlight.... Thing is I am kinda unsure what to highlight and what to shade.... There are so many folds in this skirt it makes it very confussing... especially to a first timer. |

Well i posted a message a little while ago... See I would try to draw some of my own things but #1 I don't have a scanner or wacom tablet, and #2 I just don't have a lot of time to draw. But I am going to start making some time. I need to brush up on my drawing skills. I might try drawing some of my own things in photoshop, I mentioned in eyewoo's newest post I was going to try to draw paint and design my own building in photoshop.... We'll see how it goes though. I've never done anything like this before. Plus no scanner or wacom makes it tough. Oh and did I mention my computer is as slow as hell ? Oh well Have anymore pointers for me? |

I am pretty tight for money right now.... The joy of going to college. Got a car payment, college money, living funds, I really need a newer computer but wacom will come before the new computer.... What else, oh yea I need to pay a damn speeding ticket too.... Not a good week. Painting with a mouse.... YUCK, it's just so difficult.... It's almost impossible to get a decent straight line like in wacom. It's so damn hard to draw with a mouse too. Sheesh not even a laser mouse. I need to update my equipment.... |

insider.... that image kicks ass. I wish I could work that good in PS with a damn mouse. This painting style is all new to me. I usually do a lot of abstract art with PS, but I may try the lighter thing myself. Oh and for a job... go anwhere you possibly can. I am working in a damn blueberry processing factory. I neeeeed money bad. And Zak, thanks. I dunno much about anime and stuff so my colors probably don't look right. But just how I saw it. I agree it is fairly dark. But like I said it's my first jump at it. Well I got to go. Bedtime for me (4:06AM) |

Hi,
Excellent color selection, and you have everything "flatted in" very cleanly. You have chosen your light source, which is the essential first step. Just think about the way the folds are going, and when the fabric/surface is toward the light source, highlight...when the fabric/surface is away from the light source, shade. You can do it! Ah, now if I could just practice what I preach!
Actually, I would recommend a scanner before a tablet -some may disagree, but oh well The reason being if you can color with a mouse, at least passably, then the essential element is to get your drawings into the damn machine...a scanner can do that. Just my $.02, but of course, its worth what you paid for it ![](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |
