I first started coming here, not so long ago, because I like to draw. And I like to talk about drawing. I like to get crits, and I like to give them when I can. In fact, it would be fair to say that drawing is my life. I get up in the morning, draw for a while, eat dinner, check out a few drawing sites, and then draw some more. Then sleep, rinse, repeat.

I used to get a lot of great critique here--critique which I took to heart, and which helped me get to where I am today: making a decent living as an illustrator, and doing what I love to do all the time. But last time I posted a drawing, I didn't get any critique. I got a couple of desultory comments, and a compliment or two. And that was that. Why? Because there was an interesting flame-war going on at the time.

I've never been one to flame, or to post in threads where flames have been going on. It makes me very sad to see how far from digital art this forum has strayed. I don't want to talk about who's an elitist bum, and whose pornography belongs in the dustbin. I'm not interested in the state of the forum today, and I don't care about the latest St. Neil. I care about art, and issues related to art. Like where I can find a good lawyer to help me with my copyright problems, and how to photograph my oil paintings.

This isn't goodbye--I'll still be around, giving critiques when I can, and all that jazz. I might even post the occasional art, myself.

But I just want to say that I, for one, won't be following the flame-wars. I'm not interested. And if other people aren't interested in coming to a forum full of flaming and animosity, either, then please follow my lead! Don't encourage the madness!

We've already lost a large portion of the cream of the crop. Don't drive the rest of us Sijun fans out as well.

socar, i agree with you 100%, i'm a pretty new member, but i've been browsing this forum for almost 2 years. Inferiority complexes and jealousy killed this forum. i don't understand why people add to those flame threads, i mean, this is an art forum, why don't you stop bitching about everything and just draw? it gets to be pretty annoying, so many immature people blah blah blahing about nonsense. enough of that, i look foward to seeing some of your new work socar!

I guess I'm fairly new myself. I never dared to post picture here because I'm afraid people might be too picky about it. But it turns out that people just ignores my post. That's fine by me, it's not that I don't get enough criticisms when I show my paintings in art galleries. But I'm thinking of starting to work on digital art again, and I might need some help. I don't know how to get your attention to read my thread, is it that because my name is new so it's okay to ignore me? Anyways, I would like to get some comments once in a while, but it seems that everyone is involved in the flame wars right now. How about we just ignore them? I'm also here to talk about drawing.

Well, I never thought I'd see myself doing this, but I have put up a forum of my own on gorblimey.com. It's not like this one in a couple of ways--first, it concentrates on the business side of the illustration industry as well as on art--and second, there's a 'one flame and you're out' rule. It's geared towards the illustrative arts in general, not just digital art.

Anyone who'd like to drop by is more than welcome: http://pub78.ezboard.com/bsquonky . There aren't any pop-up ads, even though it's hosted on ezboards.

i agree with you socar, but it would be nice to try and fix this place up. i don't know how exactly.. adding more moderators would be a start i think. hell i'd offer to be one. i got nothing to do all day. i think it would be best if every one chose people they trust to be moderators, but anyways, just an idea.

I really hope they DO fix it up--don't get me wrong--I love it here. I have put up my own forum not as a replacement for Sijun, but as a place to discuss non-digital as well as digital illustration, and the business side of things. I'm not leaving here, though, not as things stand, anyway.

I'm a known forum-addict. I could never leave!

I've been here since October(under the RobT alias) and have lurked since May of last year and I can honestly say that this forum is a totally different animal now.

I myself enjoy the forums and cannot keep away but many times I have considered leaving for the last 8 months.

Being optimistic that things will straighten out has kept me here.

I'm losing my optimism though.

*sigh* If things continue like this, I'll more than likely give up my moderator status.

I do not feel like I can do enough here. Not with the time I have, and not with the amount of people present in this place.

There's work to take care of, my own forum, my own art, my cat, my friends, and other things as well. With three moderators, we'd all have to be constantly present to be able to do any good. I can't do that. If that's what people want from me, then I'm failing them.

I totally agree. I have been in this forum since '99, I am member #120, but member # isnt really important. I have never seen such vigorous hate in this forum. There are some great proffesionals in this forum, and when flaming starts, people start to leave. Now, I dont really have a stand here, since I don't post much, but this forum is a fun place to be, as long as there isnt any shit going around about eachother. Im not gonna preach, but I must say, this forum is really starting to get disgusting. jUST my 2 cents...

I would like to whole heartedly agree. I am a very new member, and when I first discovered these forums, I was elated to think that I would have somewhere to come and get help and criticism from my peers all over the world. Over the last few days, I have been a witness to some of the most mean spirited, poorly focused arguments over issues that I didn't think belonged on this board.

I think these forums still host many very talented people, and I certainly don't want to see that change.

I also remember what it was like to be just starting out in this business, and how much I needed HONEST criticism of my work, not destructive comments

Just my opinion. Now back to work.

Jeremy
