Hi there I did a quick paint over. It sounded like you wanted a cartoon alien. For that to be the case traditional cartoons have medium sized lines and they outline everything. The style that they are coloured in usually has only hard transition or soft gradual transitions. This means that in areas where the character would have lots of shadows it would have quick straight edged transitions. Where as in regular light they would have minimal change and would look kind of air brushed. The postion that you have your character in is very static, little movement, as well as in a unnatural postion. I switched the arms and and turned the head to be in a more accurate perspective. I have also layed down some dark area on the gound to stop the character from floating.

I use painter, photoshop or even sometimes illustrator. The definition is playing with the setting for the brushes and creating some of your own. I like the lettering you have used here.
