I've painted these attacking poses before (there should be some on my homepage), but I thought I'd start another one and record some of the steps here.

I'm just starting out with figuring out the pose and composition, and working my way through the main masses.

this should be interesting, I hope it comes out ok :P

the dragon should look weary, with holes around the wings, the basic bad-motherf*cker look. i'd like to create an interesting silhouette with it.

keeping concentrated on the wings and trees.
I'm not sure if the bottom part should be water or a field, I guess a cracked, dead field suits the pic and looks very much like Finland this time of spring :P

argh. I have to leave it for a while, it's midnight here.

thanks for the comment apollo, making this a step-by-step thread is a great idea ;).
seriously, i miss these kind of progressive posts here, hopefully this will light a spark in you people. go through the save-a-copy trouble while painting.

This looks great! I've been an admirer(sp?) of your work for quite some time now and I really like the color choice and "rough" look of your work. Now, regarding this one, I would like to see someone trying ( in vain) to run away from the dragon...a girl maybe, or why not some cattle or sheep? Or better yet, a shepherd? And I would really like to see some kind of "high-altitude" background with mountains and such, kinda like the Alps in Switzerland or Austria.

Sooo, the dragon disappearing to misty air didn't please me anymore (no planning makes for interesting twists in the progress and countless hours of wasted work?).

I like the form of the creature, and I'm trying to go with the advice: start from mid values, go dark from there and lastly, hit the highlights in.

I'm going to keep on blocking in the shapes and see what I like. Dunno if it's trying to catch someone yet :).

I laid down a horizon line, and started to work on the background first (for once).
Some of the silhouette getting detail, i'm moving in to some detail work, but try to stay away from the more interesting parts as of now, and do the bg and not-so-important parts of the animal now.

I was hoping someone would've given a little crit or two so far, but I see this pic is going forward so fast the basic composition won't change much anymore :)

this is a great thread!
very inspiring.

and please, please put in a terrified cow in the bottom. or maybe a clueless, stupid looking cow would be even better! that would add an element of humor to the pic.

those wings is getting quite impressive btw

if you put in the cow, you might want to consider having the wide mouth open on the dragon too... like it's ready to snatch the cow i an fly by kind of move...

Man.. thanks so much for doing this Gecko. This is helping me tons!

Btw, I saw your entry in Seegmiller's contest. I think you should've won in all honesty. That is your froggy with his feet int he water, right? If not, someone is supremely biting your style.

Super thread Gecko!!!

A traditional pencilswinging cowboy like me always enjoy seing how people build up their digital pieces of art!

I quickly went through your portfolio... you've got some stunning stuff there man!!! Dont ever put down that digital "brush" of yours... unless its to pick up a traditional one!! You've got some serious talent!!

This piece is looking ooohh so promising so far! By far the most powerfull and actionpacked dragon pose I have seen among your work!!! Looking forward to follow the progress!!!

figure I'll add to the accolades.

This is very instructive. I suffer the problem of starting with a figure and no setting for it quite a bit.

A question. How much of an idea do you have for the central figure before you start roughing things out? And how often, if at all do you pitch an image because its not working out right?

Gecko, this is quite cool. I couldn't see the dragon at all in the first pic, but I've really enjoyed seeing how you 'build' it.

uhh.. hey :]
ahem, i kind of had to spend a few days in Estonia and I couldn't get it finished before that. sorry for the delay.

I saved a couple more steps, finished the thing today, and posted it all on the finished forum, you can pick up the missing steps there.

thanks for the many cool comments, I still wonder how people recognized that frog :).

go check finished gall.
