I started on some Battle Angel fan art over the weekend, after reading all nine of the trade paperbacks in sequence.
The hair is bad, I'm going to redo it. And I obviously haven't touched the legs, hand, or background yet.
Her face looks weirdly-proportioned because that's how she's drawn . . . I tried making her look less manga and the character didn't read.
Will post an update soon. |

looking good so far. cool to see gally in a different style.
the hair needs to lose some weight. the realistic waistline is a bit weird - she's so skinny in the manga. the eye kind of looks for her other arm, you might want to add it in, even if it's only a hand. real nice job on the existing hand though.

I know you are fixing the hair, just make sure you fix her hair line, its supposed to come past the ears and her forehead looks a lil big (its been a while since have read any Battle Angle though so it might be the artist not you)

Ken: thanks. Her body type really varies over the series, which I guess makes sense seeing as how she gets a new cyborg body pretty much every other issue The one I've given her is the "Imaginos", the last one in the series, which Nova fashioned out of the old Berzerker body . . . its probably her most "human" looking physique, and really the only one that makes her look very feminine.
Regarding the other arm, I'm thinking I'll put it out front, with a clenched fist. Will probably keep it mostly in silhouette.
MoleculeMan: I'll look at her hairline again, thanks. |

Can not see much that I can Crit on just that something in the foreground or the background would really create some additional depth.

PS she looks graceful, rather than solid/stationary/wieghted. Just a observation rather than a comment. |

She's quite beautiful --- especially her torso.
If I might add a suggestion, I'd ask that you *not* make her waist thinner. She's lovely and graceful as she is now. Besides, what's the point of fanart if you slavishly follow the original? No fun in that. |

Thought I'd be able to finish it over the weekend, but no such luck. Here's where I'm at:
Ignore the whackness of her ribcage . . . I don't know what I was thinking. I'm not totally happy with the hair . . . it looks more like Alita now, but something is goofy about it. Maybe its too tall. |

What a great improvement to the background!! I think that you are not happy with the hair is because it was very dymanic in the first pic and now it has some action to it, but not enough in my humble opition. Otherwise, I just keep druling(sp).

very nice, the new hair is definately an improvement. im left wondering where her right arm is though, if its your intention for the pose, cool, but each time i look at it i expect to see another arm in there. perharps it could be bent a little bit and in front of her to make her look like she is turning quickly towards the veiwer?
keep working on it, its looking great!

nice rendering...it looks like a pro poster-art. I don't really know the character so I can't really comment on how it's being represented. I think the pose is a little akward. It seems like she's going through a lot of effort to show off her bum. The first and second pictures didn't give that impression so I just commented now.
Also, put the foot furthest "in" at a vertically higher position. it'll give more depth to it, i think. |

Whoa, really really nice !
The only comment I would place is that her legs (in the last picture) look way too muscular. Make here a little more feminine below the waist ! |

...what do you mean "creating" a focal point...a woman's behind IS a focal point.
hehe. |

Beautiful. I like the coloring of the second one better than the third, as well, but I think the newly-added arm from the third is a definite must. Great job on this, looks really good.
The only things that are a little strange are the little jets of air coming from her hands and that circle on the side of her ribcage. Maybe if you could just take the arms and legs from the third and stick them on the second... |

I am so happy you put the other arm/hand in!! Looking back at previous ones, they really look unnatural like something was missing. I do however like the flesh tones of the second one rather than the third. Nova I think that the right arm that is in there is accenting the twisiting motion of the body and the postioning of the hands a creating a focus point around the butt area. And that is why it now looks as though she is showing it off.
JA
What did you do to the background it looks alot darker now? hmmmmmmmmmm. |

She's definately "a purdy one", but she's a little man-assed for my taste. Double up those gluteus maximus' and you'll be much happier, as will I ... unless you prefer man-ass that is ... (which I kinda doubt since you're obviously interested in creating "babe-art")
Teheheh ...
Keep it up ... |

Definetly a very nice rendering of the purdy young battle angel.
But I think you're going into way to much details on the muscles. Makes her look like... uhhh... a female Bruce Lee or something. Which isn't always a good look for women(I'm guessing you're aiming to make her as "poster pretty" as possible, and then it's definatly not a good look).
I also don't quite understand how she manages to get that halo-like shine\glow only at the lower side of her hair. Seems to me like it should shine at least halfway to the top of her head(judging from the general light direction).
I'd also recomend putting her right(left side of the screen) hand in a more relaxed postion.
Extremely nice skies. |

Thanks for the feedback guys. Physically, I'm trying to keep her mostly true to the comics . . . she was very seldom depicted as a sex symbol, but always with power and grace. Her proportions are that of a petite, athletic woman, and not the 6' amazonian huntress we usually see in American comics.
Oh, and the colors vary so much from update to update because I always try different things with my tone curve after flattening . . . none of the contrast/exposure stuff is final yet. I'm painting with enough dynamic range that I'll have some options when I finish.
Thanks again! |
