Well, I'd like to show everyone some preview pics of my latest sculpt. Its an Orc that is inspired by the ones in Lord of the Rings. Mine is kinda similar but my own take.

I sculpted the rough head in about an hour and its made of Super Sculpey. I'm really diggin it! I have to fix some of the proportions, details etc before its complete. I will start the body soon as well.

And finally at long last I have a website up featuring some of my original sculpts, 13 in all. For those of you wanting to know when I have my site done, well hear it is. hmmm im sorry to say....as much as i love your work...i dont really like this so far....
its that one tooth....i think give him 2 and he would look similar to a bat

Thanks for the comments. I still have quite a bit of tweaking to do on it. He will look cool when he's done. I was thinking of reducing the ears a bit, jutting the nose out a bit more and some other ideas.

The one tooth is an idea I had. I'd say he lost the other in battle.

I think it adds character, but well see how it comes out in the end.

Your site is inspirational. You should really put up some tutorials. I for one am facinated by your techniques.

very fascinating stuff, i'd love to see some sort of little tutorial, cause right now i have absolutely no clue how one would go about creating what you've done!!

ZippZopp - I use Super Sculpey. Its a polymer clay. Here is how I usually make a sculpt. I first draw a bunch of sketches to decide what to sculpt, I then take some thin wire and build an armature. I pose it the way I want. I then add some thin layers of clay and bake it so I have a good foundation to work with. I then start adding clay in clumps defining the muscles. I will usually sculpt the head and hands seperate and add them to the armature. Once I have got the sculpt looking pretty good, I will start detailing it and smoothing it. The last step is to bake it and thats it. I should make a tutorial. Maybe I will use the Orc as a tutorial since I am just starting it.

Pat - Thanks alot, I'm glad you like my site. I think I will make a tutorial for the orc I am working on. I'll add that to my site when I am done.

I like it but I was quite surprised of it's size, when I saw pic #3 ("That's a huge hand!"..). I thought it was about the size of a human head

The size doesn't make it less good though. I really like the abscesses - they look to my (nonexistent) experience quite realistic. I don't think you should make the ears smaller but larger, and point them more up in the air. Also I don't like that he has one tooth only, so if the other one is lost in battle, why not make a bit that shows that a piece have been broken off?

Anyway, it's prette cool. I've tried for years to draw orcs like that, but I cannot get it right. I think I'll try using your images as references, if it's all right?

Good to see your site is up'n running... "Bookmark".. *click*! Another great source of inspiration from an artist with a god given talent!!

The orc... awesome, No other respond! And as opposed one of the other responds to you post, I absolutely ADORE the single tooth!!! It only adds to the freaky nature of the "DUDE"!! Cannot wait to see the progress!

Bg - Thanks man - Yes I worked on it some more today, I added some more details, raised a bit of nose, fixed his lips a bit, fixed his jaw, worked on his ears. Its shaping up. Cant wait to finish it. I also like the one tooth.

ether - This is one of my smaller scale sculpts. You think this is small you should see the Minature Chaos warrior I just started sculpting today. The head is about the size of a dime in diameter. I will post pics later if you guys want to see it. Yes, you can look at my Orc for reference as long as its not for commercial use.

arkoh - Thanks man, I'm glad my work gives you inspiration. And I too am glad to have my website finally up. I also like the one tooth. I thought it would give the Orc character.

looking awesome John C! has great realism already. Can tell it's gonna rock when it's finished. Would just suggest (from looking at the side view) in giving the back of his head a more more dominant skull shape/definition coming through.

Hey JohnC...are there any good sites or books out there that you know of that explain a little more about sculpting like you do? i'd love to get some more info on it, how its done, techniques, tools etc....

Ha, I almost think you'd want me to use them for commercial use. You'd laugh your rear off if you saw a company using anything I've done.

I tried doing it, and I got the outline pretty good. However, I couldn't seem to get any depth in the forehead and the cheeks, so I decided to try colouring it and do it by using shade. That proved disastrous. I've got extremely close to absolutely no skills in drawing, and my colouring skills proved to be even worse.

I'm gonna try again and again til I - probably by accident/luck - get it somewhat right.

JohnC, yes, I wan't to see your current work. Post it. Did you consider adding a piece of a broken tooth by the way? Is it possible(easy)?

Just keep trying, you'll get it if you practice enough.

Yes, I'm thinking about a cracked tooth. I might try it to see what it would look like. I'll post that little minature head soon. Take it easy.
