in this case, color... it just looks wrong to me. ugly, and not appealing at all. i wanted it to be dripping with atmosphere, but instead it seems to be dripping with crap- hence it looking like CRAP. someone help me, i'm desperate. i just can't color a picture that isn't in broad daylight. i want to paint dark, night time scenes will all kinds of atmosphere and whatnot. instead i just end up getting crap like this.
i'd say i'm on the verge of taking my own life, but suicide is so 80's... nowadays people are all about "self-improvement" and "having a positive atitude twards life"... bleh
tear it up, wipe your ass with it, and shove it in my mouth

Take my crits with a grain of salt because I'm no pro myself, but I'll give my best and hope it's a good answer. I don't think your coloring is that bad, although I think you could use more colors to get richer textures. I think that most of the problem lies in your composition. A side shot is probably as basic and boring as you can get. Try drawing different perspectives. Maybe from behind the dragon and showing the person crouching in the corner trembling. I don't know, that's just what I thought when I first looked at it. Good luck! |

Nice Basement bound!
Another simple way that sometimes helps me when I'm getting nowhere with the colors, is to create another layer with either a flat color, or some ramp, set to "Color" (or sometimes "Hue" or even "Normal", experiment wildly). In this case a circular ramp centered over the lightsource would probably be best. Then you can quickly and easily experiment with different colors, with just a few clicks. You could even have more than one such experimentation layer, and play with the relative transparency.
Like, try a muted greenish light, similar to the background here on Sijun - from a warm green in the torch, to a colder green. Or a more golden effect. Or a dark brick-red to brown... etc etc Have fun with it, go crazy. If you hate what you have now, you've got nothing to loose right? ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |
