Hey guys, everyone can feel free to critique, but especially inkers! :] This ain't my specialty, but I'm doing it for a friend's new kungfu school. It'll have the Chinese symbol for martial arts behind him, gotta keep it simple since it'll be in BW print. That said, I'm looking for critiques focused on how to make it look cooler, more dynamic, whatever. Thanks a bunch!

Wow! That's one big package!
I know it's just extra clothing, but it might be a bit TOO much sagging down at that area. The beard kinda detracts a little from my image of "martial arts" though. Might just be me. Not putting your work down, it's great, and I couldn't do better, but you could just make some small adjustments . I love the hands/axes most! |

Head maybe too large for body and looks like done differently then the rest of the figure.
His right foot looks would look better longer.
Nipples, needs nipples.
His left axe needs a bit of a profile. Not that it is not correct, it happens in real life, but looks quier on paper.
As for inking I think more variation in line might do the trick for creating depth on the figure.

first off ... i'd get rid of the beard cuz it makes his head look way huge and when printing onto cloth ... it just doesn't come off to well. The right hand looks odd, and maybe change the direction of that spear he's holding ... you won't be able to see it to well once it's layed down on cloth. Definetly adjust his clothing cuz it looks real odd between his legs there, and that droop shouldn't be there ... it should look somewhat stretched because of his stance. THe right leg should be adjusted ... it looks much to small, and left foot is off ... it looks like its been snapped and twisted to the right, and try not to use any hatching or cross hatching cuz it just doesn't come off at all on cloth. Use varying degrees of solid lines to trace the figure and solid blacks as shadow ... keep everything to a minimal cuz to much ink ... depending on the size of the printed figure ... will defenitely come off darker than intended. |

HEY, I really appreciate the thoughts/hints! I agree with most of what was said. I have some further questions though- He has to have a beard, cause he's a particular person(with the sort of sideburnish bristling beard). Would you advise killing the shadowing alltogether, just doing a general overhead shading? Thanks again, this will help a lot when they go to print it. |

Yeah, lose the beard. It makes him look like a '70s porn star. Take the beard off and lower his head. Have his head pointing down, with his steely glare right at the viewer.
Also, maybe a wicked looking dragon tattoo on his chest.
I dunno, maybe that is a little over the top?
