The image is a study for my 'Eagle attacks the girl' picture.
Any pointers or any examples how to proceed from here - paintovers or otherwise?
Thanks!

i think its a good begining you have there, and the next step would be defining your edges. they all seem so fuzzy and soft. i wish i could offer more, but it is something im currently struggling with
the fog is pretty nice, and seems to match the rest of the image. i think there might be a few lighting issues, it seems like multi sourced lights.
the back mountain i think look the best, but those probably could be a bit darker.
the path on the one mountain, (the tunnel) is a bit out of perspective. I think the lighting is off there.
I like the colors, they have a "blasted landscape" feel to them. good stuff so far. |

Updated the picture ... gave the mountain on the right way more detail and changed the general color into more brownish (see up).
C&C welcome
Edit: added the version which has the girl and the eagle .. and noticed that my effort in putting more detail into the mountain has been in vain - the eagle covers most of the area anyhow. Doh!

nice start, man! makes me want to see
the final picture already.
the figures block the most detailed part of the background...hehhee. happens a lot to me also
I still think that (as others have pointed out before) the posture looks too static.
she should be at least clenching her fist around the base of the sword or even better than that starting to swing it towards the eastern threat...urmh the eagle
hey, draw some fire down the chasm and some
snargling fiends! ...or not |

I think working the BG and then the figures can get you into trouble, not only in wasted effort, but in the picture is not designed as a whole.
maybe get some ref on mountains, the geology and the shapes they make when backlit. Your shapes would be more descriptive then.
But I got around it by making them flat, lenghtening the lens to turn them more into abstract shapes that support the action. If you spent more time, you could render some real cool mountains back there. But be careful of the atmospheric perspective, keep the contrast low so it stays back there.
Hehe I would love to play max payne, but my NT box has a card that won't run direct x. Ugh.

Palladia, yup, the pose is static - even more so after taking a look at the paintover Graig offered. About the fire and stuff, I also thought about adding some of it into the picture, but perhaps not quite in the form you suggested. Oh well, have to 'redraw' the image once again ... or rather edit the pose more and get the same majestic feeling Graig's picture has.
Spooge, thank you so much for the 'overpaint' - makes me see how faulty my pic is, and also the fact I didn't have a clue on what to make the BG look like when struggling on the characters - I'll try to improve the pic into a more dynamic whole, shape and value wise. I was thinking about sending you a copy of Max Payne for your advice, but since you couldn't run it ...
So, I'll hit back to the drawing board (once I get home from work - don't want to spend my precious editing time here on drawing some feeble 2D graphics ).
Thanks guys for the comments.
Edit: updated a new version of the mountains next to the old one (with the gal+bird). As you can see, I got quite a lot of idea from Spooge's picture, and am still lacking the characters in the pic (will try to draw them 'on location' just to avoid them to look out of place). C&C most welcome!

Updated the image.
Sorry if I took too much from Spooge's sketch. It just has so great an atmosphere and I liked to recreate it to some extent. I hope I can get some individuality to the pic by adding a fort to the other end of the bridge as well as putting in a convoy next to the tunnel (with torches and stuff, lighting the environment a little).
Comments?
Edit: added the castle and refined the girl and the eagle a little more.
