Hi everyone!
Here is a very fast concept scetch of something I'm working on right now (I don't know if this will work, since it is the first time I'm posting anything here).
Its done in photoshop with a wacom pen. I have a pencil scetch too that i liked much better but I don't have a scanner.
I'm not very happy with the scetch at the moment so any suggestions would be nice! Thanks!
Markus

It looks like a lino-print and has a retro feel to it. Very classic "Buck Danny"-like (if you know what I am talking about).
I'd still fill in the legs with folds or shadows, they are a bit too simple to fit with the rest.
And the shoes don't look like combat shoes yet.
These are my first reactions. |

Hmmm... I worked on it a little bit more. Added some quick colors. Very quick. And I have changed the pose a little bit. He's leaning more forward now. Im still not very happy with it and I dont know if Im going to bother with it any more.
Maybe I should start on a new one?
BTW, its supposed to be a concept for a 3D-model I'm going to make, as a personal project. It's going to be low-poly (say 2000-3000 polys maybe).

Welcome to the posting populance. Don't be too hard on yourself it is a great sketch.
Some suggestions:
*straighten the barrel of the AK-47.
*Work on the boots, they tend to have a bubble like toe and taper to a thin ankle. the back boot looks better than the front one.
*Define the front knee and add some details
*The neck, helmet, and sholder are undefined
Hope that helps
JA
Could not resist coming back and posting a coloured version

Thanks Basement bound! Kept going for a little while more... Added some details, and changed the posisition of the head and front foot a little (Photoshop is cool that way. You can move and rotate parts around without having to repaint the whole thingy, hehe).
Anyway, heres the latest version. I might even finish it later...

hey markus, that's definitely a cool picture... a couple things though:
from his posture, i'd move the back foot so that's it's not in line with the front foot, coz as it is it looks like he might fall to his right side any moment now...
aside from that, it's just little niggling things:
this guy's obviously in a combat situation, so i'd make his boots less shiny... the only time we'd ever have our boots spit-shined is for parades and foot drills... also, something about the m-16 looks a little off, at least around the barrel/handguard area... i haven't handled an A1 in a while, but it seems like the handguard should be longer...
also, i'm assuming this guy's a grunt in vietnam, from the A1, the 20-round magazine, and the fatigues, so i'd fix up his load-bearing gear... you'd normally see a fannypack, and more prominent straps...
but again, those are niggling details... aside from those, i think it looks pretty cool... ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Agree with LoTekk's assessment on the gear. Unless you are looking to make him a REMF (Rear Echelon MF) he should probably be wearing jungle boots, not highly polished Corcorans. They have green or black canvas on the sides to make them more breathable. The 'satchel' thing, although it looks like a SAW (M249 Minimi) ammo pouch, it could very well be a map case (should be thinner) or an M18 Claymore mine bag (should not be as long) but at any rate, it needs to hang closer to his hip, even in his bent attitude, otherwise he is going to trip on it, mate. Try searching "ranger pictures" and you might find something to help.
Cheers. |

Hmm... Your right! He's falling! Thanks for pointing that out LoTekk!
I have tried to straighten him up a bit. And I'm adding more equipment. I'm using references for the unifrom and the eqipment. It's supposed to be a US1st Air Cavalry Trooper.
I haven't worked so much on the M16 yet, I know its still a bit off.
I still have a bit of work to do if I'm gonna finnsih this one...
Here's another update. Hope you don't mind. Is the download too big now?

it's looking good so far... he's still off-balance, but i'm sure you'll be able to fix that... here's the thing, though: if he's air cav, he seems to be travelling rather light... more importantly, too much of his gear is in loose-hanging packs... a huge no-no in a combat situation... ![](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |

Hmmmm... You're probably right Lotekk, about the equipment hanging loose, and that he is travelling too light.
But anyways, I just fixed the boots a little bit. A lot of people commented that they didn't look good. Heres the new version.
