Never mind the anatomy... This is a coloring/lightning training.
I guess I haven't directed the light correctly.
Also need help with shadows and that edge rule Pro talked about, if anyone got the time
Thanx for the help!
Bye for now!

OK one good rule of thumb when working with a strong light scheme is a 3-point gradient system from light to dark and from warm to cool colors. The side of the face thats lit should be the lightest and all values within that area should stay about the same. Use of cool and warm colors can help provide the details without losing any of the value. The area at the edge of the shadow will be darkest, and in the case of a portrait, the color would be a sienna/burnt orange color in most cases because that is the color of skin in shadow and that is the darkest part of the shadow. The farthest point from the light should have a similar value scheme but using the coolest colors available, and the edge should be have a slight "halo" of dark, cool color, to give a sense of volume. I dont know if I'm explaining it clearly tho... its something that comes with a lot of observational drawing. it looks like this image is too well-blended and the value changes are too subtle for the lighting scheme you've given it. The edge of his nose, and the side of his face would be much more enunciated with halos of light areas and the middle area would be much darker, while his right side would be a lot cooler and darker. Work from warm to cool with a stronger contrast between the areas and it'll make a big difference, and will also allow you to play with the volume and space a lot more. |

Hi Kinten
I don't know if it will help you but I did a very fast overpaint. The guy in this picture isn't nearly the same anymore but I noticed it at the end. I changed to many things sorry.
A thing I have to add to the things lafolli pointed out: Try to figure out the shape of the head and the different planes. Nearly every plane got its own colour and value I think.
You should take a look at craig mullins page I think there are still his tutourials to be found if not search this forum for his head tut (maybe it's at 3d palette? I don't know anymore).
oh nearly forgot the pic:
It's far from beeing perfect and there are some people who could do far better but it was fun and maybe it'll help at least a little bit. |

Thanx guys! Really useful tips! I've done some changes, but nothing to post so far..
nil900, I dont know what to say...
It feels unnecessary for me to continue with my version, cause it will only end up looking like a failed version of yours
I really like it, thanx.. |
