cyberpunk/sci-fi underwater city
Work In prog!
cyberpunk/sci-fi underwater city
I need help with concepts for a personal design project
Heres a bit of an outline
90 years from now the Earths surface is no longer able to support Humans. A greatly reduced human population is crammed into cities built under the sea. The city folk are banned from travelling to the surface.
These cities are possibly covered by interlocking domes of transparent plasti-steel. Visualisations for one of these cities are desired. Plan views, diagrams or vistas. How will they look? How will the population get on? Will the rich live high and the poor live low. What will parks look like and hospitals? How will Submarines enter or leave. What will it feel or look like from inside one of these. What special features would the buildings have in case of a breach in the dome wall? Has anyone got any ideas? Can do any scribbles? anything?
Here are some of my extremely rough brain-storm scribbles.

The city exists because the surface of the earth has been destroyed by the sun. Pollution, nukes, wars, and finally a meteor no ozone layer and no protection from the sun's rays. The sun is free to reek havoc. BUT that happened a long time ago. The city has been around for a while and Perhaps it really isnt that bad anymore. Perhaps the leader has banned people from going to the surface, as this will prove the people can live up there. That being the case there would be no further need to be led by him. He would lose power.
The people of the city are eager to venture to the surface but it is forbidden. The city is over populated. The people are getting restless. There is a huge separation between the classes. Prisons are over crowded.
Terrorists are threatening to blow up a dome if the government does not change its policy of not allowing people to the surface.
The main character is an operative sent to stop these terrorists, but along the way she discovers that people can really survive up on the surface. She then is forced to change sides in order to free the people. She then has to do combat with an increasingly skilled set of assassins sent by the government to take her out.
Roughly speaking. Im still in the process of putting the story together. |

hey eldevich, every little image helps. It's going to make my offering look like a kindergarten sketch though!
I figured maybe the cities could be built on plateaus under the water and covered with gigantic plastic hemi-spherical canopies. The air would always stay trapped inside the canopy, maintaining a water-level at the edge of the plateau.
Citizens could not only enter the cities from the ocean freely, but they could travel along canals cut into the plateau all the way to the residencies. |

For the entrance/exit into and out of the "domes" (or whatever you end up using) you can have a place where the submarines er ships enter then dock. Once docked the place closes up and the water is forced out and the people can enter the dome through another door which will close once the people have entered the dome so the place can fill up with water again, and more people can enter/exit... Maybe they can enter from the "docking room" by some sort of subway system too... Just some ideas.. I'm a bit confusing but I think you can figure this out... |

The idea is that the inverted cones draw water and plankton into them like a big toilet bowl, and they begin to glow. Hehe... uhh he.. he.. |

I'm glad I can be the first to respond to this one...wow. The colors, values, and the damn glowing is incredible. Real sense of being underwater is captured here...
Jeez, I remember way back when you re-did my Tarzan pic, I'm still amazed
Keep it up!

p.s. Great job everybody else, the concepts are pretty swank. |

Whoa, I can't even wrap my brain around how incredibly creative you are, Craig. I know you hate the kiss-ass thing, but I am quite literally (not just saying this) amazed by almost everything you show us. I think that it's great that you spend as much time here as you do helping others grow as artists.
So, I dunno if you hear it enough, but thank you very much. |

I like the way this man thinks. I wish my toilet bowl glowed when I flushed it! |

That's incredible, Craig! I love how you know where to place the colours that aren't often associated with underwater scenes, like the browns, purples and yellows. Maybe I'm arse-kissing but everyone has to do it once.
If only Seaquest had looked as good as that |

Here is a quicky in todays lunch break. Its the first little thoughts for the main character in the cyber city project
She is supposed to be cybernetic. I haven't completely desided on her human/cyborg ratio yet. Also if -
ANYONE CAN COME UP WITH SOME CYBERNETIC IDEAS _ ESPECIALLY FOR JOINTS - please upload scribbles!!

Well I hope you will take it for what it is... This is not my usual drawing, but what the heck, I think she has turned out to look the way I saw her in my mind when I read your text! Hope it can give you some kind of inspiration!
I emagined this girl to be somehow partly human, not only in mind but also in physical appearence. She could be made out of parts that were human, the upper torus (Ofcourse the left side containing the heart!), the stomach or whatever, this would make it more likely for me to relate to her as a character. And I didn't see her fighting with that toygun of yours... No, a real woman, would use a wooden stick!! Not to be misundestood!!!
Keep at it!

arkoh - Awesome drawing. Just love that techneque. A agree with you that she must be an enhanced human as opposed to a robot as it would be very hard to empathise with the character. I love how the half of her is human - its very cool.
Maceface.. - She is a human being not a robot. Shes a government agent. She has had certain parts of her body eg. limbs, muscles and skeletal parts, replaced or upgraded in some way with cybernetic parts. Also brain enhancements and some surprises I don't even know yet lol.
In the story she is sent on a mission to stop a group of eco-terrorists which she attempts to do until she discovers that it is the government that is corrupt. Once the government finds out that she's onto them she is targeted for assasination. She does combat with a multitude of ever improving assasins until she hopefully wins the day.
She should be atractive and athletic. I have been toying with the idea that she will be asian or white as that kinda fits with the cyberpunk style but this is still open. I thought a red indian girl would be kinda awesome. Never seen a cyborg with a feather in her hair.
I have no idea of her outfit. that is also open.
Its all wide open. I need ideas here. I am still trying to build her personality. Its early days yet. I think thats the fun of it.
Ok I hope that helps. And I just want to say thanks for the effort. I hope you are enjoying this.
It is a personal project in order to practice conceptualisation, design, character and environment design. Rather then just drawing whatever - I think its good to work towards a project.
Here is an earlier illustration which looks nothing like the girl above but was my first thoughts on the character. She does'nt look cybernetic but she is in action.

Naaah dont you worry!!! I am enjoying anything that might take my thoughts off the daily grind and make me remember why I have choosen a creative line of work, even if it is just for a couple of quickly done handsketches! I dont know if my employer is enjoying it all the same though, I very much doubt it! No, this challenge of the emagination, this conceptual approach to designing and the search for this ultimate answer hidden within a bit of scribbling... see isn't that what life is all about!?
And then this... I haven't done this kind of thinking since I was a kid, and fooled around with the crayons at daycare! I believe it will keep me sane through the rest of the day, where all my creativity is wasted on the "REAL" life!!!
I'm with you! Well at least once in a while, when "REAL" life permits it!

I am glad that you enjoy this humble thread. Its always good to have a small escape from that annoying reality. I am really enjoying this project. It is interesting how complex it could get. I really want to have fun with this. I hope people stay interested. |

Wow- I think this a very cool idea and I loved Craig's background painting so I just had to come up with a character. I'm thinking of biomechanical aqua people with fish-like blue skin and dreadlocks. Maybe their skin is luminescent from the algae. |

This WAS going to be a lunch-break speed pic but after 1 hour and 30 minutes it still wasn't finished, so I went home and finished in a total of four hours.
This pic shows the herione government agent in her ceromonial military dress, ambushed by eco-terrorists while on a diplomatic mission to Alder- *ahem* the surface.
She's got a prosthetic titanium endoskeleton that assists her movement with thick strands of purple synthetic muscles. The theory is that the artifical muscle fibres have three times the strength of ordinary human muscle, almost have the density and protectiveness of kevlar but need far less regular maintainence than cybernetic motors to function properly.

Shiro - "...as though a million brush strokes had cried out, and were suddenly blue-screened..."
Thanks, man! I had lots of fun doing it, and I'll probably do more in the future.
Kari - great looking cyborg you'd posted here! Seeing you pic brings up a good point. If these people grew up away from sunlight, they wouldn't have any tan whatsoever. Splendid piece she has, too. |
