UPDATE: I made a quick paintover of the pick, using the colors i've been thinking about. now i need a pro or someone to tell me if these colors work together/are ugly/whatever... pic is at the bottom of the page

sketched this one at school a few months ago, and since i've been completly viod of inspiration for the past few months, i've decieded to color it in photoshop, to keep myself busy. here it is:

so heres what i want... the cat-tail things are glowing really bright, and its nighttime. i want the only two lightsources to be the moonlight/stars (not in the pick but assumed to be there), and the glowing cattails. i don't really have any set colors for any of the objects in the pic... heres the colors that come to mind when i thought these charactors up: the cat-tails glow yellowish, with white and orange in it. the leaves on the cat tails are green and the mushroom thing that the cat tails are comeing of of is biege-ish i guess. the monkey's skin should be biege or fleshtone, with purple or blue or green or orange hair (whatever works best). I was thinking that the trees in the background should be blue, because of the cool moonlight. they would have highlights of yellow from the glow. i want the light from the cattails to really be effecting everything in the pic, casting shadows and generating a lot of contrast and colors.
i'm not sure about any of these colors, i'm afraid that if i use these colors together, the pick will end up looking ugly. i really don't know anything at all about colors and i really need help with it. i'm open to changing the colors on any of the charators/objects.

paintovers would be fantastic, but and advice you can give me would help a ton

thanks!

i don't know why this post got almost no replies, it's a really cool sketch.. i like the monkey's pose, the way he grasps that branch ,curiously but carefully approaching that wierd glowing plant..
regarding your question- i don't think there's an easy answer.. best way i know is experimentation - paint it roughly in photoshop, using only your basic flat colors, each on a different layer- and use the program's color adjusting tools to tweak it to perfection. the basic approach you mentioned sounds pretty reasonable to me (cool-bluish background and shadows lit by moon/stars , warm-orangish forground where lit by the plant.) since it's a night scene, contrast should be pretty low and shadows soft and diffuse anywhere except for the ares lit by the cat tails.
can't wait to see the colored version.

Hey, thats a nice scetch! I guess I would have started adding colors in a new layer in "multiply" mode, letting the pencil lines shine through (dark blue tones). Then pherhaps create another normal layer and add some highlights.

Thanks for replying for a second there I thouht my post was going to fall of the page and get lost forever :P

Heres a quick sketch of the colors i'm concidering. i just kinda put a few colors on each object to show the lights, midtones and shadows. i put a yellow sunburst gradient over the whole thing in another layer with "multiply", which i think helped it a little bit.

i really don't know anything about colors, so my question is: are there colors ugly? do they work together? are there any certain colors that i shouldn't be using near eachother? advice/crits/paintovers greatly apperitiated. thanks in advance!
