This image is inspired by a million and one things. It started with a friend posting her remake of Biondina. That sent me browsing through Art Renewal where inspiration always overwhelms me. On top of that I decided to read fellowshop of the ring (for the FIRST time!!) and the character Goldberry sounded so beautiful that I just HAD to draw her (or something like her). Enayla and Fleabrains "detail" shots inspired me to work really big on this one - 3500x2500

This is just a clip of the larger image, and I adjusted the colors to make it look more natural. The colors I'm using for the actual painting just don't feel the same without the environment included. (bwahaha... edited a sentence out that was intended for another forum. I should think before I copy and paste next time! )

Ok, enough yapping from this silly girl. Here's the picture:

Here are the colors I'm trying to work with:

And here's the whole composition, shrunk down a lot:

I really want to go with the blues because it seems more fitting with the character but the warm colors look more natural. So bleh... I dunno!

A reference painting was used for the pose:

The colours are going to look fantastic, Jez, and I'm sure it'll convey the beauty of the movie and the books themselves! It looks like A LOT of work so I hope LOTRs seriously inspired you enough and I hope you've still got quite a few holidays left! LOTR comes out in two days for us aussies and the wait is driving us MAD!

Got some pointers for the last composition - I think her head is very small for her body. I can't quite tell where her crotch is, but if it's a little above her wrists, she's got four head-heights between that and her chin. In my stubborn proportions guide, it should be three head-lengths, but if you've made her head like that deliberately, then that's okay!
Also, in that composition, she looks very bored and vacant. Is that the emotion she's meant to show?

*wiggles eagerly in seat imagining the finished piece*

This style reminds me of a renaissance painting.. interesting. Then again, you mentioned one of your references was from art renewal.. go figure

The character sort of reminds me of Galadriel, the Elven Queen. All that "mystical" blue gives off an aura of magic. I cant remember what Goldberry was supposed to be in the books (read them a loooong time ago, although the movie rocked), so maybe its accurate. Either way, looking good so far.

One last suggestion: Perhaps some moonlight filtering through the branches would enhance the atmosphere?

its looking fantastic so far.

on a side note, goldberry in my mind had a gold light around her, and clothing that was almst plant like.

its wonderfull and interesting to see others interpretations of literary works. i love it.

Thanks for the comments all.

Yeah, this piece is pretty far from being done right now, everything outside her face and that bit of clothing in the close-up hasn't even been worked on yet. Thats just my basic sketch to determine where I wanted everything. So there will be moonlight filtering through once I'm finished =)

jabber - This really doesn't look how I pictured Goldberry at all, lol. The drawing was more or less inspired by her, because like you said... I picture her more golden as well. This picture is a blend of so many inspirations that some of the original Goldberry was left in the book. *grin*

*giggles* Bored and vacant... awww shucks. No, that's not quite what I was going for, hehehe. I guess I'll have to work on that some. I suppose I wanted her to look more content/intelligent/peaceful.

I had wanted to finish this piece before I saw the movie because I didn't want my technique to be swayed in any direction. But I found out that Goldberry isn't in the movie anyways so maybe I will see it. *bounces eagerly*

Can't wait.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

It looks good(!!!) I can't wait to see it finished.
The eyes seem to be looking in different directions (not cross-eyed, the opposite).

How'd you get the texture on the background?

Thought I'd just give a couple quick comments.

I much prefer the warm colour version to the cool colour version.

Something doesnt look right about the right nostril and lip area, looks raised in comparison to the left side, kind of giving the impression of a smirk. Unless thats what you wanted.

This is the best thing I've ever seen from you. Can't wait to see it finished! I don't have any C&C at this stage since it's still fairly unfinished.

hehe edward burne jones is cool - all i have too say..

no wait - great picture too!!!!!

edit- ps try too keep those nice lines in the pic - dont make it too smooth - the combination with the smoothes - and the lines would make it a great pic.
Also i would make the face look "thinner"

go with the first one.. but make the colors closer together, so you get a better impression of the image being highly based on greens and browns. ooooooooh shiny

I like the color scheme (the cool one) but her skin almost looks sickly in it. I know it matches the clothes, and it may even be what you're going for, but you might think about adding just a little more skin tone color (such as a red or orange) in her face at least. She just looks to me like a ghost as it is now. Again, this might be what you're going for, if so, ignore me.
