This is a drawing of myself that I’ve been working on for some time now. Sadly I can’t color at all, any suggestions? (Your take on what I should do or what it should look like)

Its a very nice drawing, though I think the file size is going to put people off. I've recompressed it and put a 300k version up on my server . . . if you'd like to use that instead, the url is:

Hope you don't mind. |

Wow Erika, lovely. Well as you know there are many ways to go about coloring. But since you used yourself as reference for the line drawing of this portrait.....might I suggest the simple thing: Use yourself for color reference!
I don't think you can really go wrong with that---unless you are going for a certain feel. In that case, you need to decide what feel you are aiming for. That's my 2 cents. |

that's a nice line drawing! It looks very much like a lithograph. I agree the size will probably put off a lot of people responding unfortunately. As far as approaches to adding color and paint, that's a pretty big and open topic but I'd say a good place to begin is to start adding layers of flat color until you are happy with a general color scheme. Regarding what type of colors to use, I'd think about what mood you want to come across and pick your pallete accordingly. For some reason it strikes me as a dusky garden scene. |

That's a very lovely drawing Erika, but no one in their right mind will sit and let it load. I'm on cable and it still probably would have taken at least five minutes. |

you're pretty
Also, i would reccomend coloring based on your self. As for the clothing, then just look at the clothing an stuff. IF you need help coloring there are a few tutorials here, as well as other places. (www.goodbrush.com has someting good on painting theory, http://www.seegmiller-art.com/index.htm has some stuff on the topic of painting too)
hope this helps.

my 2 cents:
don't color it ... it's wonderful art the way it is. IF you want to pratice coloring, start a picture which you intend to play a bit around with.
Otherwise you might be sorry about having given this picture an impression you didn't plan for it (if coloring fails) ...
don't do it. |

I think the picture is really nice and the girl is cute. Well done. I don't know why but there is something spanish about the skirt and leg position. It reminds me of a spanish dancer.

I like it, everything about it looks good.
The pose, the face.
If you don't mind me asking, what nationality are you? |

Very pretty.. =)
The colored version looks fine.. If you're planning on leaving the skirt white, you kind of need a colored background...
but wow, i really like it! |

What you should do?
I think you should call me =)
I like that soft coloring. I wouldn't touch it a lot more. Except for the dress.
It needs colors, but i think too strong color would give it too much attention.

That is you! can we meet? hehe j/k
I really like it, I love how you have put a lot of detail in the clothing.
The coloring is good but lacks color in the clothing but I can understand why since it would take a while to get the right colors and all.
Very nice. Comes across as a very attractive drawing.....I am sure that is true to real life as well :-) |

Cant you post a real pic of you so we can compare it with ur drawn pic. It would be easier to give crits then
hehe j/k
Really nice pose, but im not sure if i like the inking of the dress, the lines seems a bit unconfident drawn on some areas.
I really like the pic tho.

Thats a beautiful drawing. If you did put up the photo(s) you used to illustrate this self protrait we could compare how well you captured the likeness. The way you colored it is also nice because I happen to be a big fan of watercolor. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

haha good call erika.
all in all i like the pic...the line art is crisp and solid and it has this flow to it. (ie like the dress) i wouldnt add too much color to it...because it could possibly take away from it. im not sure though and it looks like you allready started to color it! which btw is turning out pretty good!
anyways looks good so far and look forward to more art from you! |

don't like the lines you colored with a simple, soft, yellow "glowing". they look like spaghetti.
hmm ... well ... the hair looks quite flat, doesn't it?
also you might want to keep a lill secret next time ... don't mention it's a self-portrait, if you want good c&c ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

What do the initials on the bottom of the shoe stand for?
Wish we could see a photo of you too. The drawing is beautiful, but rather "cartoonish". If the proportions of your face are equal to this drawing, that's something I gotta see! Are you mixed with something? The girl in the drawing doesn't even look Japanese to me. |

while i like this picture... theres a few things about it that are bugging me. first of all, teh face seems a little plain. try to work some of your distinguishing (bleh i can't spell) charatoristics to it.. to you have big eyes? a small nose? high cheekbones? thing long and hard about these things.
basicaly what i'm saying is that from what i'm looking at here, i'm not confident that if i saw you in person or a photo, i would recognise you in this portrait, right off the bat. when you draw a portrait, someone who has known you your whole life, as well as someone who just met you, should be able to tell that the picture is of you. get my drift?
i like the body, but again try to add more of "you" to it... do you have long legs? short legs? are you lanky, curvey, skinny, etc etc...
the clothing looks awesome... i can't think of anyhting to crit on it. i like it a lot.
allright now that i've pretty much ripped you pic to shreads, i'll leave you with a summary of what i'm trying to get across: this is a great picture of a girl in a dress... but are you sure that its a great picture of you in a dress? think about that.
Hope my opinion helps,
Geoman
ps: try not to post such huge pics.. not only does it take forever to load, but i can't look at the entire picture without scrolling all over the window... very hard to get a feel for the proportions and such. |

Yeah, geoman2k hit it right on the money about your drawing being a nice drawing of a girl but how do we know its an accurate self-portrait?-Thats why I asked you to post your photo but since you don't feel comfortable doing that since it seems it was a problem before then I don't know what kind of critique you can expect from us. I think without the photo I can say this drawing is really beautiful and graceful, almost for like a greeting card or something. Also, please keep the file size small, I have a fast dsl and it even took me a while to download your monstrous-sized images. What dpi are you using? Whatever the case I look forward to seeing the finished piece. Goodbye. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |
