This character was fun to paint. I'm really getting used to this digital painting. I sketched this in pencil, scanned it and converted it to vector in streamline so that I could play with the line weight. and then colored it in PS. also I'd like to mention that this one was inspired by Roundeye's Cowboy.. It was awesome.. I love his characters.
I'm not really done with him yet. i'm not happy with his sneakers yet. i think the highlight on his hair is a little to bright. I may ad some spraycan art in the background and a logo on his sweatshirt...maybe.
any C&C's?

Very nicely rendered.
excellent detailing in the color.
I'm just not used to seeing that level of detail with the thick outline though... i think the outline fits better with flatter images. still nice though. |

Thanks Jero. You're the 2nd person that mentioned the thick outline. I don't usually do outlines so thick.... actually I don't even use them at all sometimes. this is an experiment. I'm trying different things. I don't know if i should go for a comic book style or an illustration type style. i may try and either reduce the thickness or remove it altogether... or maybe both, thats the beauty of this digital medium...I can save multiple copies and experiment with different versions.
Here's the sketch I started from.

only thing i would change is the sweet face off the kid, if he's doing graffiti art, he could be a bad boy hip hop gangsta or something...ruff tuff, creeping in the alleys to slam a tag down
he looks like the happy go lucky spraypainter, that kid would get beat for sure thats my only beef
wicked brushstrokes, really nice lineart
love the wrinkles, and especially the shading underneath the characters "left" hand thats in his pocket.
nice ! |

Anthony J, I know whatcha mean. so I changed his face and added a few more things to make it look more "ghetto". I got the grafiti from a grafiti site. I darkened this one up a bit so that the red lighting would be more effective. what do you think of the changes?

Dammit!!
I liked the Vanilla Ice thing you had going there....
I think the outlike is powerfull and it's also what makes it different. But then again you could say that a Jewish, old man, homosexual grafitti guy IS different in the first place, hehe.
Good job on both ones.
