Hmmm...
they're at it again.
Nadia versus Atlantis
quote: Nevr heard of Nadia till it was mentioned in this NG. Long after we’d finished production, I might add.”
— Kirk Wise, the director of 'Atlantis: The Lost Empire'
hmmm...do you believe him? |

Yes. People may put Disney down all they want, but seriously folks, why bash the Gods? Even if the character designs and certain situations are extremely similar, the animation level of Disney is beyond any quote-on-quote crapshoot anime. I love anime, but Disney is Disney. |

I only have one question?
Im no anime fan so I have know clue when Nadia was made.
But if it was made a good time before this, and with the evedince shown there.
I have know question Disney Riped it off compleatly.
Its one thing to have a character who look like another. But down to the RED boe tie. And to have several others look just like thir counter parts in Nadia....Not Done on Accedent I can tell you that. |

I dunno. It seems everyone's arguments are based mostly on character design. The character design for the captain from Nadia is a HUGE rip (homage?) from the captain from Robotech (or Macross, whatever you know it as). Does that mean anything?
What this guy says about the plots does make them seem similar, but they were drawn from some of the same sources, right? I'm not defending Disney here.. hell, I haven't liked their recent movies, but I'd really appreciate it if people watched both Nadia and the Atlantis movie and came to their own conclusions. I haven't seen either, so I'm not going to assume that the movie was a major rip-off, nor will I assume that it's a total coincidence (maybe in the middle?). But, what I do know is that I won't let a biased guy on the net decide for me.
I don't know, maybe the answer is right in front of me. If I get around to watching both of these, I'll probably decide then. |

I haven't seen either movie yet so I'm not going to start accusing Disney of anything until I see them both. My point is, if they did, they aren't the first (I realize that doesn't make it right but I'm just saying). |

Maybe they did and maybe they didn't. I think they did. It's not that big a deal... I mean, the Japanese are guilty of riffing on US movies too. What insults me is Disney expects us to buy the old "We never saw that before." bullshit they fobbed on us with the Lion King. These people live and breath animation and they expect us to buy that? We're not talking obscure material here; these are influential and popular works here --and in the case of the Lion King/Kimba the White Lion, a legendary work by a master creator. So, of course they've seen it. In my book that makes them liars. If they'd just have said something like, "Yes, we were inspired by...." or "We wanted to make an American version of..." I could respect that. Apparently Disney thinks we're dolts. This lack of integrity for the artform and their own public image, combined with a lack of respect for the intelligence of their audience, strengthens my belief that Disney has crossed the line from making art to making a product.
Akolyte: I'd take that crapshoot anime any day of the week if I knew it was a genuine effort of creativity. The people at Disney aren't Gods... they're not even decent men.

MeatyCheesyBoy: Haha, oh yes... that's how the world goes 'round... =)
I've never seen Nadia nor heard about it before. But I have read the comparisons/simularities of both the Nadia and Atlantis plots and characters, and I must say that it is quite shocking. Yes, they both were based off the same novel, but, character designs and story elements and sucessions are just too strangely simular.
Just because Disney can animate better (using lots of 3D nowadays -- ooh) doesn't mean they can't rip off other people's stories and make more cash off of it because of their name and their huge marketing machines (I'll have the McAntlantis combo please with two of those cute little plastic Antlantis toys!). Of course parents will buy anything that is Disney for their kids because it is THE symbol of non-violent entertainment for kids that also appeals to kids all over the globe. They have know how and exploit it well. But again, that doesn't mean they don't steal off other people... not that they are, but they very well could. (it's the Lion King all over again, uh?)
Of course, on the OTHER hand, what better way for the people who distribute Nadia to make more money off their old release by bringing this up to have sales/rentals go up on Nadia? Any publicity is good publicity. If Disney stole from Nadia or not, those Japanese film makers are using Disney to get some good attention.

you guys are comparing animation. that isn't the case
the case is comparing original charactors in a storyline, which I think disney is guilty of.
that is too close on charactors and storyline for them to get away with it. I mean, change the looks of them a little more then that. they even kept the nadia charactor personality.
just cause they are disney doesn't mean they don't have executives that want to make $$, kids aren't runny the place....and they aren't a big corporation for being right all the time.
they stole this and enhanced it with their animations and named everything differently, but just like movie right in real action (not animation) this is stolen work, not stolen animation. |

Disney always uses outside source material... but that they've stooped to just directly ripping other films in recent years is pretty weird |
