reference pic
This is my first attempt at a painted portrait (well more like a first test at seeing if i'm up to the task). Its for my father for his 50th B'day in December.
I've done it rather quickly, actually cheated by tracing the outlines with my wacom as i was more interested in trying to see if i could paint skin tones. I tried to pay attention to many earlier discussions on skin tone.
Having said all of this though i have tried to also make the photos lighting and mood a bit more flattering as the reference pic is pretty crappy quality. I also tried to relax parts of the face a bit more to the way i know my dads face sits when he's not caught by surprise on camera.
Any comments or suggestions on the general colour scheme and rendering techniques before i get much further?
Cheers

You're linework seems to be the problem over-all; it seems to be a little stiff. I'm not sure if you are using a mouse or wacom, but try to make it a little more loose, free flowing. You're proportions aren't really the problem.
Keep it up! ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Hey, nice start! Although when you progress in painting.. take out your linework, or even now you could just replace the linework with the proper shadows to hold those lines, linework doesn't look good on portraits :-(
Hmm also you should add a bit more redish tones in there for the darker areas.. just slight redish tones.. it will make it look more realistic and lively :-)
Go for it! |

I'll definitely take out the linework once i continue....When i've been painting it i've had them in at a low opacity i just turned them up in the post so people could tell what was going on. I'll definitely add some more redish tones...
Cheers

Well heres an update after spending about 4 - 5 hours (i think) on it over the weekend. I've worked mostly on the area under the eyes. I'm a bit slow at it at this stage but i'm pretty happy with the progress. Before trying this i wouldnt have thought myself capable of being able to paint something like this at all. Having said that i know there is still room for improvement and would love any comments, suggestions or crits.
I'm Considering getting someone else to pose in a different shirt which i'll reference for the painting as i dont think the one in the photo is what i'm looking for (after a nicer shirt all one colour, most likely blue).
Also Any ideas for the backgrounds anyone...I have absolutely no idea what to do there.
Cheers
Dave
PS. its A4 size at 300 dpi.

It's looking GREAT! He's going to love it!
I agree a nice blue shirt would look nice on him!
I have a portait of my Dad that a friend of mine did. He's in front of a bookcase with beautiful, deep, richly colored, leather bound books behind him. Makes him look homey, comfortable, yet distinguished. Not sure it's what your portait needs, but just thought I'd throw it out there for you. |

Thanks All for your nice words of encouragement. I'm rebuilding my home machine this weekend to try and eradicate some serious performance issues. So hopefully after that i'll post some more progress.
Cheers
