i think your clothes would look a lot better if you tried to paint them as 3 dimensional forms instead of just using darker colored lines to indicate where folds are. |

Hmm i worked on some of the shadowing on the clothes, and i added and fixed up a lot of spots that were messy around the picture. I also fixed the face a bit/ =D

I understand what edible snowman is saying. There are parts of the image you just treat as filled in shapes of singular value...Like the darkest gray shadow on the right. That's sort of a more graphic, paint by color kind of approach, that could work if the whole piece was done that way. But you seem to want a more painted look...with, as you said, more gradation....so you need more values in the clothing: the white on the left is the exact tone of the white directly against the darkest shadow. there needs to be and overall definition of light and dark. the right side (er....the figure's left) should be in shadow, not so high contrast, full light with splotches of darkness here and there like you have now. hope that helps.
The color is nice, however, and if you got the entire piece rendered as nicely as you did the head then I think you'll have a sucessful piece. |

sorry im not too coherent. it helps me when im shading clothes to think of clothes as a 3 dimensional object which they are, instead of concentrating on just fold placement. usually i think of them as triangular planes, because when you simplify the shapes they're usually triangular. actually, now that i think about it, that probably doesnt help much either. |
