here's another Loial piece. I think he comes a lot closer to the character than the other one i did.
i almost prefer the rough to the refined drawing, but *shrug*
Fire away.
I'm not sure at this point whether it'll go Inkwash, Colored Pencil or just digital or what. Still need to nail down the pencils.

i like the rough better too. i think it is because of the axe weilder's face, in the rough , although not clearly defined has sort of a shwashbuckler/jamesbond sort of coolness to it. when you 'refined' it it lost that quality, and lost the character in the rough. whatever you ae planing to do next the axe effect on the rough will definately help.
to fix the face i would just study the rough, the nose is to bulbus in the redefined, and the mouth is to garg-ish, i think a grin or evil grimace woudl work better. also the eyebrows are a little different in the rough, more of a poised questioning look like 'the rock' does.
all the rest looks great though, it is just the main face i see as un appealing. |

No! No! Noo! Loial is a peaceful boy - this image speaks against the character.
The art is pretty decent, though. Well done. |

Keto: yeah, you're right... maybe i should rework his face.
Shaded: have you read all the books? I can recall at least three times by the end of book four where he "laid the smack down".
Granted, he didn't enjoy it, and i'm sure wouldn't want to be remembered as doing so, but that doesn't change the past.
Seriously though... this is a scene from The Shadow Rising where he's got a human woodcutter's axe in each hand, aiding the defense of Emond's Field from a tide of trollocs.
(thanks for the good word, BTW)

Hmm. I agree with Keto - the face needs work. Also, I don't think you've captured his scale well enough here. You got that little guy on the right, but he might just be smaller because he's farther back in the distance. Perhaps as you work on it more you'll be able to put in some more indicators.

Pigeon,
I'm kind of at a loss of what to do for scale. As it is, i'm seeing just a huge blood swathe from the wound to the axe, so that almost eliminates the left half of the composition.
I totally see your point that the guy in the BG now could be WAY behind him right now. hmm. I thought about putting a guy's head in the trolloc's hand or maybe i could have someone standing right next to Loial cringing back from the carnage.
any thoughts?
i'll try and get a facefix posted this week. |
