This is a picture I'm painting for my little brother who loves to play counter strike and other games in the net. His net name is Tinman and this pic will be his new spraylogo. I'll polish the whole character like the (his) left leg but I'm not sure about the background. Any ideas?
Crits are welcome and please tell me how I get the hot part of the weapon looking more like nearly melted metall.

Mottled brown. Have it fading to black : the edges, like the fog of war!... maybe?

I really like Tinman! He looks great!

To make the end more "melted" looking, maybe make it look a bit shiny/wet. Think of how cheese looks when it's melted, but hasn't yet lost its shape. Very shiny!

Hey Man,
Cool design and great start.
Here is the simplest way I can think of...
make the thing you want to look bright surrounded by dark. here is yet another paintover...

Keep kickin ass,

Hi, thank you for your replies.

Sean McIver: At first I wanted to use brown but I'm not shure anymore. After I've seen the overpaint by KOryH I noticed that my colours suck. Perhaps I'll have to change some thing. What is the fog of war? (probably stupid question)

Wus: Thank you that helped a little bit.

docfunkalot: I allways use brushes without blending because I don't like the "soft" airbrush style that much. There are people who do great jobs with that but not me.

KOryH: You did this fast paintover and I work for hours at this. Yours is definitly far better than my version. I'm a little bit afraid of posting the next stepp cause it looks like sh** compared to yours. Anyway you helped me a lot (big thank you) cause you showed me that I should sit down and think about colours again and again.
I don't know if I'm able to do it like you did and I don't know if I'll try but I keep the colours in mind for the next pic.

Some things went in the wrong direction I think.

Crits?

nice. Did you mainly use transparent brushes without blending?

sorry for replying that late bg but my computer was down for two days . Now it's back.
Thank you for you overpaint! The melted gun is an excellent idea but I still think about using it because the warrior isn't able to fight with a weapon like this anymore. The 3d letters are to much in my opinion. The colours, I know that my colours are to monochrome so I'll sit down and take a close look at yours and the overpaint of KOryH and try to improve my colours. I think the next step will be posted in the finished pic section.

The fog of war is an all-encompassing dark mist. You could have tendrils wrapped around his feet, etc. This would also darken the background considerably, allowing you to focus attention on the gun, etc. You could even have a helmet on the ground half cloaked in the mist, suggesting the end of a hard battle? Again, I dunno..

Sean McIver: Now I think I know what you are thinking of. But before doing the background I'm doing some colour test (take a look in the holy warrior post).
The idea with a helmet or even a skull is great I'll use it, thank you.

Nil - to make something look hot, like Kory did, you depend on the surrounding colors. It's all about contrast. If it's all light yellow then the white part won't look bright. It's about having some strong reds next to some bright yellow/white, some orange thrown in here and there, and a sort of glow coming off the whole thing-like a hot spot in a photo. It's all about the contrast of colors. Nice pic by the way!
