Hi,
This is my first post here, so I thought I'd introduce myself as well as showing my latest piece. My name is Jonny, and I've been a CG artist for 11 years. It's only recently that I've been doing 2d digital paintings, but I'm really enjoying it.
Since I haven't had a chance to work on this for a couple of months, I thought I'd post it and see what you think. As you can see I haven't begun working on the background yet, although I know what I want for it. I'm not real happy with the face so far either, I might scrap the face and start again.
(Detail images are 50% of actual size)
You can see the concept sketch here: http://www.zerogravity.com.au/jonny/2Ddig/New/Stront01awip.jpg

Welcome Johny. Your piece is reaaally nice. I can't wait to see it finished. That guy's pretty muscular... Is his forarms really bigger then his thigh and head ??
I like the face even tho the colours are a little monotonous.
I really like how he carries himself too.
You say you've only picked up digital painting recently but been doing CG for *gasp* 11 years, could we see some of your other work too I know I'm curious AND greedy..
Cheers !
P.S.: I'm suprised to be the first one to reply to this.. |

Wow! I like it. I think it's coming along very well. As far as the face goes ,I think you might have gone a little dark with the shadows. If you hadn't said anything about it I would have just assumed that you wanted him to look dirty and scruffy. can't wait to see the finished version.
P.S. the sketch was excellent too |

I miss reading 2000ad and Strontium Dogs.
Anyway, I like what you've done, even in it's unfinished state it looks solid. Yes his face is a little on the dark side but if I remember rightly wasn't it like that.
It's a little hard to pick out detail on the grey areas of his suit but that may be down to bg colour and could also be something to think about when doing the bg.
It would be nice to see a finished version but as it stands it's a good piece. |

Thanks for your comments
Hehe, Yeah Egerie I tend to get carried away with comic proportions.
You can see much more of my work on my website and my personal gallery, check the link in my sig.
I have only worked on the primary lightsource so far, in the finished pic there will be a fire in the foreground creating secondary highlights from below. I thought I'd try this as a different approach, keeping each lightsource and shadow seperate...
But the monotony of the face is one of the reasons I'm not happy with it. I might wait to see what effect the light from the fire has.
Thanks Hovair, and you're right I do want him dirty and scruffy, so at least that's working
Axl, I also miss them which is why I started the pic. Then I found a local newsagent that sold 2000AD, so I pick it up every now and then. Of course I can also re-read from the hundreds of old 2000AD's i still have from when I was collecting them religiously.
Yeah the background is that color only for my editing, it will be darker, well, have more contrast in the finished state. |

I like the comic proportions especially! And the colors/texture treatment on the clothing...very nice work- It has a very solid, weighty feel to it. I'm not familiar with the character so to me his face does look a bit too deeply shadowed for the rest of the figure. Can't wait to see more. |

He looks Hella tough!!
Actually he looks like my X-girlfriends Dad which scares me a bit! Very cool image. I dont see anything wrong with the head at all. I really like the way you have textured it. I would love to see it finished |
