Here's one: paint it by hand first. Plan it out in a sketchbook, decide on some good colors, give it a purpose, then render it. This image says nothing to the viewer, there's nothing special about it right now. Ask yourself WHY you want us to see this, WHY are we this far from land? WHY is this land meaningful to us?
Most importantly though, use all the filters you can now, so you never ever have to use them again. Filters scream "I'm new to this and don't know what I'm doing!" so play with them all now, get it out of your system.
hope this helps for future projects |

What Isric said. Also, I liked the image until I found out it was originally done in Bryce 4. I thought you had conceptualized it from a sketch and painted it digitally. Try doing this by yourself, don't rely on a program to do the work for you. Remember, its the artist that makes the art, not the tool. Later man. |

Brutal huh?
OK, well what could I possibly ad that everyone above didn't?
Even lanscape artists, including directors of film and digital and photography, find a focal point for the whole piece, lighting, shadow, contour, "natural" phenominon etc...
Look at new age music cover landscapes for this sort of thing, or heck, even landscape artist sites. Well now that I think about there is TOOO much to go into. Just get a book on lighting and composition, and do some manual painting to the feel of what you want to work on, slosh dark and light paints around with brushes randomly and see what come up with in the images your mind will project on the swirls of paint.
Most important, the biggest defeat of any skill, is being in too much of hurry to impress your self and others. Make it a standard to play with an image for at least 20 hours, walk away for several days, come back again and rework it, take your time. Filters are ok as a base to create something out of, or for getting an idea of a final effect you need guidance in. But to depend on them is like nails in a coffin.
OK enough of my latenite banter...back to work! For myself that is
