This is pretty much the first time I have ever attempted to draw anything like realistic looking. I know it isn't that great, but I would like some hints, and comments on it.

I am just starting my jump into art also and I have to say this is a good start. keep doing this and every drawing will get better (with a couple peices of ass thrown in to make you frustrated) only thing I can say is to keep trying to get away from making lines. nobody has a line on their face in real life its all composed of shadows. I am in the same situation but its exactly what my teacher is telling me so I am passing it on to you.

Yea, in my mind I know that, but putting what I see directly onto paper just isn't that easy, thanks a lot for taking time too look at it atleast.

good starting point. I suggest you get into looking at as many references as possible as well as how to books and this forum!! And DRAW DRAW DRAW. You will get better and better. Try drawing something similar to your favorite artist and then try figuring out where yours differs in terms of say:
strength of line
comosition
ratio of darkness to light.
shading
etc
just go on from there. Practice - you alreadyu have the eye for it

ok what id like to say is
-the picture seemed a bit light.. you might have scanned it wrong or something but its a bit hard to see.
-get ur hands on some anatomy books, also there are countless number of sites u can find which can teach you the basic outline of a face, or search this site , im pretty sure i found one here.
-keep drawing.. practice makes perfekt i guess.

mm.. in comparison the nose is a bit short for the face, as in the length, and the distance between the nose and the mouth is too long.. just keep practising and you'll get it.. nice start though.. keep up the good work

Maybe you should take a look at some of the books that teaches pencil drawing. Most of the books will have pictures of examples that tells you how to transform 3D objects/scenery into 2D drawings. I remember in my first drawing class in my life, the teacher asked me to copy a drawing from a book. You can learn a lot about lines and shading from these books.
