i have been reading on this forum for a very long time veiwing other peoples work, learning tips, etc. i really love digital art and i decided that it was my turn to try and create something of my own. below is the first picture i have attempted in photoshop. it was done using just a mouse and the dodge and burn technique.. if you have any tips or comments you think could help me out please post, i am really looking to improve.. thanks!

Depends what you are going for. This drawing is fine as a cartoon/caricture, but if you want to play with realistic portraiture you have to remember that line does not exist, so lose the black unless there is actually a true black somewhere on the subject. Line is only formed where two contrasting values and colors meet, and don't be afraid to hide where a line would be in logic if both sides of that line are the same value and color.

To get realistic proportions and likenesses think of the face as a collection of basic shapes, and make sure you double-check the relation of the shapes you form to the other shapes as you go.
