Right, so I spent five hours painting this with a mouse (I'm saving up for a tablet), but I havn't got a clue how to do this hair. Everything I try looks wrong...
Okeedokee, here's the reference. I know, some things are 'off', but uh, I was working from scratch in photoshop with a mouse...and I didn't plan out carefully. (By the way, I didn't use the eyedropper tool any, I generated all the colors on my own)
Can any one of you amazing artists out there (*note the shameless sucking up*) give me a tip on this hair? Better yet, do an overpaint? I want to be able to give it to my grandpa (he's that guy), but uh, he needs hair.
Thanks.

umm...would not realy know where to start either..the prob is that you have a wonderful amount of detail within the actual face that this detail also has to be transferd to the hear..or the composition will loose balance I think.
Also..you have actheved a very natural look..and thats hard to atchive with a mouse...this natural look will be even harder to keep up while rendering the hair...dam..a toughy...All I can sugest really is to paint the hair almost a strand at a time..try to keep your patiance and persist till it's done. This way you keep the volume of detail constant.
Sorry I could not suggest any total fix .

I'm not an amazing artist, but-
Going more abstract with the hair will focus the attention on the beautifully rendered face, no? Every painting class I ever took recommended going for a more impressionistic apprach with hair, suggesting it, without painting in every single strand.
Good Luck! |
