I knew your style looked familar . . . I did the shaders and lights on that Paw Island trailer

"Looking digital" is probably very viewer-specific . . . John Q. Public doesn't even realize you can paint with a computer, and Jane T. Nerd will be able to spot a digital piece a mile away.

To my eye, the sky, background, and clouds look very traditional . . . whereas his hair and jacket might be a little too clean looking. I think that perhaps hinting at a cooler underpainting in those areas might help sell the look you sound like you're after.

Nothing drastic mind you, just some breaks in the warm tones where more neutrals or cools could show through.

I like it! No crits. I'm impressed you were able to keep the brush work intact after monkeying with it in PS.

I really enjoy your seperation of foreground, midground, and background. HUGE sense of depth and movement. Wich is perfect for a mellow somber boy floating through the night sky. Very successful.

Great stuff Mike Knapp!
And welcome to Sijun's!

It's really nice to see such a fresh illustration piece that shows a sense of design, style, and traditional training. Especially it stands out to me since this forum tends to be more towards photoreal/super hero type of art.(which I like too...)

Also there have been a bit too many unnecessary arguments in the forum lately...So it's really nice to see a quality piece like yours!

I especially like the flat cut-out clouds. I like the overall color too. Your angular drawing plus sense of lighting must've been very challenging too. What a piece!

The only crit if I have to give would be the background...? Is it too muddy? Well, I kinda know you probably did it on purpose.(knowing who you are) But I'd love to see the background a bit more crisp especially the stars and lights in the city? What do you think?

Anyhow, keep posting your stuff.

thanks

Wow, your images really remind me of the comics they print in Maxim magazine. Needless to say, you are incredible. You have such a refreshing, unique style. It's like a breath of fresh air to the digital art community. I welcome you with open arms directly into my favorite artists diskspace Keep 'em comin bro!

I've been painting with acrylics for a long time too. I know it's easy to get carried away by the simplicity of the clean colors and perfect gradients when you start doing digital painting on the computer.
But I think you did a good job, but perhaps it's a little too dark? Just a tad? Try fiddeling with the contrast and curves in PS.

Ugh, I can't spell...

Wow. Absolutely great work. Love the use of color. Very little blue for a night scene which I think is great. I would leave the background alone if this was mine, it has a great sense of depth. It might just need some taller buildings sticking out to give it some scale...
One question, having looked at the work on your site, I noticed I had a hard time guessing which was acrylic and which was digital. How do you create that 'painted' look in PS? Is it custom brushes? Just curious.
