These are two studies I've done for a portrait I plan on doing for a friend. They are both done with a Burnt Umber wash in oil. I plan on doing the finished painting in oils also. Any comments, crits would be appreciated. Which one do you like better?

are you working from a photo or from life? usually when i'm working from life, i try not to do such a detailed underpainting, becuase the model will move and when you're limited to that underpainting, unwanted distortions will occur. but what you have now looks pretty cool. maybe i should post some of my paintings. i'm from the duran/sargent school of thought.

Dryfire: Thanks. I like the monotone approach too.
Macface: I think I like the bottom one also, it has more of a mood.
Jr: I'm working from photos that I took myself. Both pictures are actually combinations of two different photos. And both of these are smaller than the finished piece will be, just studies to figure out what pose I like best. But even if I was working on the final painting, with a live model, isn't the point of an underpainting to lock down the pose so that you're not "chasing the model", who, like you said, will move. I've been reading "The Art Spirit" by Robert Henri and he talks about that very thing. You want to fix in your mind and on your canvas that instant in time that you want to capture, and then from that point on you just use the model (or photos) for reference.
I'm also a HUGE fan of Sargent. In fact, I looked through one of his books for inspiration before starting these. I never get tired of looking at his paintings.
And yeah, post up some of your own paintings, it would be a nice change of pace from all the digital orcs and pirates around here (although some of them *are* amazing). |
