This was supposed to be Dalamar (from the Dragonlance books) but he looks too clean to be real, and I don't like the way it looks right now. Any suggestions/tips on eyelashes and skin tone and how to get a nice not-smudged vaguely real edge?

Well, I'm far from being a master(or even good, for that matter), so I can't really help you with the skintones. But his nostrils are too far forward. His nose ends as soon as it meets his face. It's not that way in real life.
My two cents. |

The eye has that egyptian lack of perspective, and your skin tones need some warmth or something...elves are usually green or black, right? I'd fix the nose as well...look at a profile of a human and slenderize it with pointy ears to make an Elf.

Hey, Nukleon, where did you read that elves are green or black? Regular elves are white (not white white, but caucassian) while dark elves, or drow, as they're known, range from brown (Record of Lodoss War), to dark blue (The Icewind Dale Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore), to dark ash (D&D). |

Bishop: someone commented on the initial sketch that he had no nostrils. ack. heheh. thanks, I was wondering what that problem was with his nose...
Nukleon: green or black? eh, really? wowza... I'm curious about the Egyptian perspective fault, what's that? Anyways, he's a very cool character (who sleeps with waaaay too many women. bad elf), so I didn't want to make him too rosy. That's reserved for Fred Ljungberg, my lovely Swedish football player.
Luke: Drizzt is black, not blue... please... tell me he's not blue. Man, I'm obsessed with him. |

You need to take a look at some actual human profiles...Dragonlance elves have facial proportions very similar to humans, and at the moment yours has a number of errors. Besides the eye and the nose, the forehead and the chin are both too small (or the eye and nose are too big, take your pick). The eyebrow is quite flat, which increases the 'Egyptian' effect.
Here's a quick oversketch...hope it helps.

In most of the books's covers (Icewind Dale Trilogy, The Dark Elf Trilogy, and Legacy of the Drow) he appears blue. Dark blue. In the Forgotten Realms Campaign (for 3E D&D), he appears as black. I don't like him blue, either. |

heyza:
Eric: thanks for the oversketch, I did something to his chin, it looks like he can actually chew now :)
Luke: on the new book he appears to be a fashionable shade of indigo. I fear for the cover artist's life.
thanks again |
