Hi all,
I am new to both traditional (i mean painting on paper) and digital painting. Basically, started learning about 2 months ago and I am doing this as a hobby.
I generally had a look at some stuff on the "threads o' knowledge" and I painted this pic in photoshop. Basically I need some help on the lighting and shadows. Are they proper ? and how do i go about texturing the apple ? Ive also tried some traditional painting and I am groping around in the dark here too. Any websites or books (websites preferred, since books are not available here in India) which I could refer to ?
Thanks a lot
I'm sorry if the image looks too simple, but I'm still in the basics stage.

wow chalker, thanks for those links. looks really helpful. I had a look at that apple link and touched up a bit more on the pic, and this is what i have now. I added a little texture, improved the lighting and also extended the shadow a bit. Also worked on the part where the stem is attached to the fruit. It looks a lot better now, but I'm sure it can still be improved a LOT further. Especially, the shadows look dull and the part where is stem meets the fruit is not quite right. Any more suggestions would be appreciated.

Give that apple more texture, and add in an environment. More fruits, perhaps. |

I agree with shaded the apple needs some environment. think of some things that maybe used with an apple. Try a knife, I've seen some people use them to eat them perhaps a bowl of apples. As for the apple itself you may want to apply some varient colours of red and perhaps green to mix in. remember nothing is of one solid colour or tonal range of a colour. Don't get me wrong I think you are learning alot and I like where you apple has gone. My last point is that I feel that your piece is missing depth. your background and counter top are using local colours(flat colour) add some thing that will create depth like a hankerchief under the apple at an angle. That hankerchief may or may not dissappear on the horizon, or may flow up against the rear wall. Darkening shadows will also add depth to a picture. If all else fails set up a still life.
Aaaarrrrgggg! am I really suggesting to do a still life. I know they are boring, but hey you learn alot from them.
