A good way for me is to use the smudge tool. I usually adjust the opacity to 40% or lower. I never use it above 50%.
Thats me though. You might want to fiddle with it some.

at 3dLuVr they have a tutorial about blending the colors but it works with Painter by Corel.
They have this really cool "Just Add Water" * drools * , feature that looks awesome.
but in photoshop i usually take a larger brush than normal(like 17 for a 1000x1000) airbrush, set the brush to Overlay, Opacity to 5 or less and paint away on a Normal new layer. i usualy will have like 7 different shading layers some set to Overlay and some to Normal to try to blend with better with base color. i think my shading turns out pretty nice.

Well, maybe i aint no veteran, but what I think works best is using the brush at opacities ranging from 30-60% and alt-clicking to get nearby colours and doing that over and over again until its all smooth and nice. that way you wont ruin the texture like with smudge tool. hope it helps... |

well, i prefer blocking in midtones with a hard bursh set to 100 opac, then adding more values (still with a hard brush) and an opac from 70 to 100...to blend the colours i use a mediumhard/soft brush set to 20-40 opac and use the colourpicker all the time...as Luder already said, the advantage is, that u dont destroy the tex with the smudge tool...
just my 0.02 $
