Hallo,
It feels good to be on the verge of completing something.. happy happy happy!
First of all, I've been trying to reduce the number o layers I work with.. I think it's been a max of 4, on average 1 or 2. I think we should all try something like this when it comes to painting. Work goes a little faster, you're more in control of what goes on, and it's more like 'real' painting.
Don Seegmiller had some great general thoughts on coloring faces. (http://www.seegmiller-art.com/general_thoughts.htm) I tried some of that here. Yea! It was easier than I thought.
So here's my reason for posting.. I need some ideas for a background for this girl. She's a dark elf, (I figured) and I think she's coming out of a cave here. I'm not so sure. That's my excuse for making the lighting a little lighter.
Also, which one do you like better in terms of skin tones?

I like the 2nd skin tone better.. if she's a dark elf that pale look suits her, and she comes out of a cave it would still be at night so i think the lighting should be pale... Nice picture...

First one has better skin tones.. however, the fact that its an elf (the ear) is lost in that hard shadow.....
mebbe putting a second light source could help distinguish that more.

Alright this is starting to look like another Nova masterpeice. I normally hold back on my comments but you might be interested in this observation.
The nose... your nose is facing towards us but everything else is quarter shot. This in turn makes it look like her hair is combed to the side when I know you were going for a straight back look. Not that I truly understand the shapes of an elf but something seems a little fishy about the jaw as well.
You have some great stuff going. Work with the background on this if you're up to it. Make a story out of it.

oh yeah
Dark Elves in most AD&D books, Everquest game, and other pictures I've seen depict the dark elf with black charcoal stains over the body, not african black, fireplace black. I'll go with the second picture in that case, but think about lighting up the eyes some more then...
As for the background I like the idea with the cave. Maybe have some ray beams streak through. I picture the caves you see in "Cast Away" with this.
Hope my comments were of some help
OH - I see what was bugging me earlier - its the placement of the ears. They look almost profile and a tad low.
This is still a great image though and feel free to toss my two cents asside since they are only Canadian anyways.
