Well, guess I'm reverse engineering things here a bit but I really need it. This is the kinda stuff I shoulda been doing at the beginning but never had someone around to tell me so.
Anyway, I've heard about the infamous white matte cube so I decided I oughta try it out. If anybody can point out any problems they see it'd be greatly appreciated. I just bought some supplies to try some gouache work as well and I'm thinking I might try and replicate this exercise using that as well...could be a good start I suppose.
Well, here it is...be gentle. No wait! Don't be gentle, I came here so people could be brutally honest. So have at it.

First thing: The shadowed side of the cube would be lighter at the top and darker at the bottom.
Second thing: The edge of the far shadow nearest us is at an odd angle. Nice start. You could probably find the old matte cube thread/

Here's a quick update making some corrections that you mentioned, Anthony. There was a reason I made the upper part of the shadowed side darker though...my logic could be off, I'm sure. I read somewhere that we perceive the shadowed edge around a corner to get darker just before we turn the corner of the object to the lighted side. I was thinking that making that top edge just a bit darker would give a greater sense of there being an edge there. Dunno if I'm right or wrong on that or if I'm just not implementing that idea correctly but I corrected it anyway.
[edit] Ah HA, I think I found what I did wrong on the shadows, gimmie a minute to correct I thought I was forgetting something...ok, here's a correction, boy was I way off. This should be better but I think I should still go back in and airbrush it in (instead of Paintbrush) and make it look cleaner. At least it seems I'm getting something outta this. I'll have to try a few more.
